Yesterday my trusty R1T was side-swiped by a drink driver. He rear-ended another car and hit mine - hard. I am still very early in the fix or total process, but I wanted to share this.

The R1T took the hit like a champ, but alas, it snapped the front left axle - it couldn’t drive. DriveCam saved the day. I was able to show the accident to the police and prove that the driver (who was trying to deny everything) was at fault and cleared my liability with my insurance company. Attached is a pic after it was hit and a GIF of the accident. It almost looked undamaged.

I hope no one else goes through this but just wanted to remind people to save the clips to the hard drive. I’ve already ran into Rivian repair issues. The body shop won’t touch it and Rivian won’t see it until 1 May at the earliest

I’m at a crossroads of what to get next. I want another R1T but I’m not getting the same deal. Maybe a dual motor?
We’ll see.

Glad you have camera footage and no one was hurt.
Surprised that snapped the axle..it didn't look like that much damage from the photo.
It does look repairable from the photo but check with a Rivian certified body shop (their website has a list)... No need to let Rivian service look at it.

That kinda looks like the driver of the Prius is at fault. Crossed solid line. However, if the other driver was indeed intoxicated and confirmed with testing, that’s a different story I guess.

While you can say the Prius made an illegal lane change, crossing the solid white line, the SUV was at fault. They were coming at a high rate of speed to an intersection where all of the vehicles were stopped at a light. Had he not hit the Prius he would have blown through a red light.

If the SUV was traveling at the posted speed limit it would have had more than enough time and distance to stop before hitting the vehicles.

**** EDIT ****
You also cannot claim the Prius was at fault, even after an illegal lane change, as the Prius was established in the lane prior to the accident.

I see your point and I partially agree. However, unless there’s an actual reading of the SUV’s speed, it’s purely speculative. Also, the posted speed could be 50. Again, if the other driver was indeed intoxicated, seems moot.

I hope all are ok. That was a strong collision.

Never ceases to amaze me when DUI/OWI drivers try to deny everything when they clearly rear ended the other car. Their car is damaged in front (they obviously hit something), other car damaged in rear (they are the ones that got hit), other car hits Rivian (collateral damage).

Hopefully law enforcement held this driver accountable. This could have been much much worse!

Where was the SUVs attempt to slow /stop for a red light? While the speed limit could be 50, I doubt it in a city setting. Either way that SUV was going much faster than 50. Just look at the distance it covers from the start of the vid until impact in a short amount of time.

Could’ve been a turning lane with red signal, where the other traffic had green?

And the moon might have been a quarter full in the age of Aquarius igniting swamp gas that emitted a localized discharge causing the SUV driver to lose control.....

Exactly my point. Pure speculation.
The SUV driver didn’t lose control. The suv driver hit the car that turned into its lane.

No. I never claimed the SUV driver lost control, my previous post was entirely in jest which you missed. You just don't want to admit the obvious, which is fine.

The OP can chime in, as he should have more details, and we can see whom is closer to the truth. I already know the answer to that one....

Glad you’re ok, and I hope the driver of the Prius is as well.

If your truck is totaled because of this, it won’t do any favors for the unrepairabilty narrative that surrounds Rivian. Other than the snapped axle, the truck looks mostly unscathed. If a broken axle can’t be replaced without it being considered a total loss, us owners are in for a world of hurt.

With the video it will be easy for the police to determine an accurate speed for the SUV. The distance between the light poles and the time it took the SUV to travel that distance in the video are both known values so speed is easily derived.
