Isn't it bonkers how they're all failing in such rapid succession?

Almost like there was an 'expiration' date on the batteries. Or, in a tin-foil conspiracy thought: maybe Rivian knows *all* the batteries need replacement and they're just OTA 'messaging' the fleet so it's an under-the-table recall.

I received the dreaded 12V error this morning. My first thought was ...no biggie... I can wait til next Friday, it will be fine. Then I remembered that I have to drive across state to catch a flight. Obviously I don't want to drive that far and leave the R1T at an airport unplugged. Sigh...I guess I will have to fall back to an ICE vehicle. Boo

Notice that Service didn't bother to answer my inquiry. For the record, I have a NOCO boost jumper and the appropriate tools - just in case.

Definitely don't do the Drive. Insist with a mobile battery replacement ASAP otherwise, ask for a loaner/rental for your trip. The chances of getting stranded are high.

Also, as you probably know and have been recommended to you as well probably, keep your R1 plugged in while not in use for an extended period to avoid shutting itself down. I would remove the charging schedule, and set a charge limit (i.e.: 70%) and leave it plugged in all time.

(I kept a window rolled down, disabled all gear-guard nonsense, and put mine on a level 1 charge. I got the message at 70%, and everything was fine when mobile service arrived. I did not drive any further after getting the message.)

Just as a data point I have a very early production truck with dual batteries and 48k miles...still OG batteries without issues....knock on the wood dash...

I ended up getting rivian service on chat and they worked it out for me to get the battery replaced this coming Friday. That should make for a more enjoyable trip. Unfortunately, it's a work trip, so it won't be THAT enjoyable. But I wanted to share a POSITIVE experience with Rivian support.

That is my concern with the 12v batteries. It's like they can just fail at any point and then the trucks are useless till Rivian can fix it. I like the old way of running to Walmart, Autozone, etc...buying a battery...swapping it...and back in business. I really wish Rivian had made it easier to deal with 12v batteries.

ICE only :(
In the hopes of getting my appointment rescheduled to a mobile service, I sent a message through the app, responding to the appointment confirmation I have for mid-December. The local service center's response was that this was a special appointment and they were supply-constrained.

Er... ok, but do you have any earlier and/or mobile appointments available? Someone could theoretically have cancelled or rescheduled. I guess I will have to call and wait on hold a long time again...

My 'theory" is that the C&D Technology brand 12V batteries carried a limited business to business warranty from C&D Technologies to Rivian. From what I've read Rivian has now moved on to a different supplier for it's 12v batts and since they are no longer doing business with Rivian, C&D won't be doing them any "favors" just blindly taking back bad batteries that have passed the warranty date because Rivian is a good customer. With that in mind, it's possible Rivian is swapping out loads of "potentially" failing batteries before the B to B warranty expires and Rivian is stuck paying for the replacement battery.
FWIW- Business to Business warranties can be very short (like maybe just 3-12 months from C&D technologies to Rivian) but Rivian has to cover them for the full 3yr, 36K mi period to the customer.

I don't think Rivian is swapping out so many 12V batts before they actually fail out of the goodness of their heart as just the labor expense alone has to be substantial. I think they're spending some now to save a lot more later when there is no OEM B to B warranty left on the batts and they'll have to pay for the labor and the batteries.

  • 6/23 build
  • 12/23 delivery
My 12v battery sequence of events...
  • 9/23 at lunch, first 12v warning
  • 9/23 evening, got the open windows warning
  • 9/24 am, got the exit truck, stay away, and open windows
  • 9/25 lunch, truck died at work and would not start up on any jump pack
  • 9/25 pm, brought a generator to L1 charge it and see if the 12v would get enough to wake up; it would wake up but brake was firm and never got the truck to "start".
  • 9/28 I jumped the 12v directly as the wires at the rear never did enough to get the truck to wake up. Hooked to the battery with jumper cables and she woke right up and was not happy. At this point the truck would drive and I got it home, but could no longer sign into apple music (still waiting for my appointment to fix that).
  • 9/30 truck picked up via flatbed to service for 12v replacement.
  • 10/2 noticed ticket said completed, but no call that evening
  • 10/3 call 1855 service for update and was told it was ready but I asked about prior issue and was told they would call me back to confirm it was ready
  • 10/7 I call again and transferred to service center and told it was ready without confirmation of repair of previous issue
  • 10/8 Drove a couple of hours to get the truck and primary 12v was replaced, AC system checked (repeat issue)

How are you guys determining the production date again? Is it part of the VIN or label on the inside door?
I'm going by the production date on the label in the door jamb.

Hey. You guys/gals are making me nervous with this battery stuff. My R1T has a 7/23 build date, delivered 9/12/23. Going into winter, I donā€™t need a bricked rig šŸ˜”

Do you use https://electrafi.com ? Do you have an account there? I'm curious to see one piece of data that might show us some info :)

Well, keep an eye on your vampire drain, if you see it rising suddenly... be on the lookout for a failing 12v battery.

No, I donā€™t use electrafi.com. Maybe I should.
If you don't mind registering there (there's a free trial, I think) and use your truck normally for a few days and report back here, I would like to know how does your truck "sleeps" at night when NOT charging.

So if you can and don't mind, please register and remind me here in a few days once it records info from several cycles. :)
