You are 100% right. I never get on an elevator that removed the elevator attendant. Fools that risk their lives on self driving elevators. It’s getting hard to find a safe gas station where a skill techs will pump your gas.

if you think driving is a requirement to transportation by a car, drive. I’m shocked you would waste money on an electric vehicle. Gas engines work great.

I believe in my lifetime steering wheels will be removed from most vehicles.
Elevators are on cables, much like my Disney world tram example, typically tied into building management systems which are controlled and monitored by humans. would I get on an elevator that was designed to go in every direction with other human and natural factor variability, Nope

More people, specifically in the US, SHOULD use public mass transportation. But with much US is rural environments and the existing infrastructure, personal mobility is limited to owning a car.

Yes, ICE engines are an established and proven, commoditized solution, For my use case, EV is the better tool for the job. ICE still has a place.

Use your imagination. Wouldn’t it be cool if someday you could jump in your car, in MN, go to sleep and wake up in CO.

Wouldn’t it be cool if on a 8 hour drive, you could be at work on your computer?

wouldn’t it be cool if no semi’s were allowed on highways during the day, they drive all night long with no one in them.

imagine.

the walker complained the horse was a joke, way can’t people just, walk, why do they need to get somewhere so fast. What’s the hurry.

the horse rider complained the automobile was a joke, way can’t people just enjoy the ride. Take time to feed and clean a horse.

the automobile driver complained self driving is a parlor trick, why can’t people just drive. They can’t possibly have something more important to do than just drive.

I’m not sure driving is the same as painting, reading, studying, gardening, napping, or doing anything you like to do. I personally think driving is a waste if time. Especially if you need to drive long distances. Driving is not fun. It’s dead time. Self driving vehicles might give you back that dead time. Now if you want to use that time to text and scrolling the web, knock yourself out.

driving might be the biggest dead time in my life. Some day no one will own a vehicle, when you need to go somewhere a vehicle will pick you up and move you to where you need to go. Might be across town, or across the country. And you can work, sleep, rest, play, paint, exercise….

I’m rambling, my point is just because we have cars today that we own and drive, there is a good chance we won’t have cars in the future to move around. Vehicles will do that work for use, eliminating dead time.
Having worked in factory automation hardware and software most of my career, it's been part of my job for years to imagine what could be done for our clients, but also keep it grounded in practical, realistic goals and costs.

No semis on the road during the day, vehicles doing all the work for us, nobody owns a car, etc. is not practical or realistic for a multitude of reasons. Your signature says you are from Wyoming? If so, you should be fully cognizant of the fallacies of this thinking, and it has nothing to do with technology. Technology is here to serve people, not the other way around.

So a couple of HR allegations (which by definition means there are two sides to the story) proves he is guilty of intentionally lying about planned Rivian technology. ?

No one said he is lying?
He reiterated what RJ signaled in 2019, which proved egregiously erroneous. And I’ll stop you there from making any comparisons to Musk, this is independent of what their competitors are or aren’t doing.

I am sure both are genuine in their statements. Am merely highlighting these predictions that have not come true according to prior timelines. They seem to be doing it again. Does history repeat itself? When 2027 rolls around, we will all have the benefit of hindsight.

(And the lawsuits are beside the point. They may point to potential red herrings in their startup company culture, which the article alludes to).
Hope that clears things up for you!

"Lawsuits are beside the point"

That was the purpose of my initial response to you - the lawsuits have nothing to do with this discussion.

I'm glad I finally cleared that up for you and you agree!

Cheers!

You never had to over come something in life? You must have been very lucky.
*sets popcorn aside, and leans toward keyboard

I'll give you credit for putting your struggles with addiction out there, it takes some balls, and personal acceptance, in most cases, to be able to do that. Without getting into to too many details, my brother struggled heavily with addiction and it did a number on him and our family. He overcame it thankfully, and is a much better person as a result with a renewed self worth and outlook, despite the life shit sandwiches he was handed.

Not sure the extent of your own addiction/recovery, but kudos on that. The whole big swinging dick $50m tech entrepreneur portion tho, was a bit much.

*Leans back from keyboard, grabs a fresh bowl of popcorn.

Source: RJ speaking at new San Francisco space opening

RJ says the gen 2 lightbar will change color when the car is driving autonomously, to let others know. Pretty good idea!

Interesting development! Wonder if this will cause Gen 1 owners to upgrade to Gen 2
I didn’t get a R1T for self driving, and most certainly wouldn’t upgrade for that (certainly non-free) feature. If Tesla gets $15k for FSD what will Rivian charge?

I prefer to drive, not be driven. That’s the reason I’m in the left seat, not the right!

Long time listener, first time caller. TBH, full self driving doesn’t really impress me. It’s not something I can see useful. What is love to see is full self driving for rush hour. For when I’m in traffic going under 40. With break check avoidance. With the ability to navigate heavy traffic care free. Doing 80 on an open highway hands free is meh. Had free at 8 in heavy traffic that is stop and go….take my money.

Raise the pitch forks....

From the S1 filing in late 2021, Lifetime Revenue Potential (LTR) from digital services ($5,500) and enhanced self driving ($10,000) was estimated to be around $15,500. We know Connect+ has been scaled back, cost wise, to be more competitive than other models. Self driving I feel might be treated in 2 different ways, a full up front purchase add on when buying the vehicle, or a subscription service.

In the end, a lot of things have changed since that 2021 S-1 filing, but it's clear Rivian is aiming to recoup the investment and continued R&D cost. It is a bit unfortunate for Rivian, and to an extent Gen 1 owners, that they couldn't increase the feature set and expand the original Driver+ platform to include further levels of autonomy. That's a large base of around 70k vehicles they could have drawn further revenue from.

Lower the pitch-forks for a moment....

Maybe, however, Gen 1 is just the gift that keeps on giving for us early pre order holders. Original pricing, Longer warranty, Nearly 30 free software updates further refining, enhancing, and adding to the vehicles capabilities (Snow and Soft Sand mode as an example), free basic autonomy Driver+, lengthy free connectivity (before Connect+). All in all, customers got the win there.

It is funny to see the anti-FSD attitudes here. Autonomous driving will be fantastic and it will be everywhere once it works. Think about 60 million+ mobility-limited people in the US who are dependent on others to take them places. (e.g. the 10-16 year olds and the elderly plus people with various disabilities.) Think about how much productivity is lost carrying them around or their own productivity loss due to being unable to be where they need to be when they need to be there. For older folks in particular, this will be a huge benefit to enable independent living.

Then there is the insane waste of human effort spend driving trucks and taxis around the country. Just crazy. It will be an invaluable leap in human productivity, road safety, and personal empowerment. How long will it take to get there? More time than it might have, less time than it could have.

I agree, this is the only time I've ever really cared to use the self driving of my Rivian, or even a rental Tesla. otherwise, I drive because I enjoy it, and Rivian's are fun as hell to drive!
