I tell my Tesla-driving friend that I'm OK with not having full self driving on my R1S, because I actually like driving it. That being said, it was a welcome treat to see that we may be getting it soon. There are definitely some times when it would come in handy, such as long boring stretches of highway (which it handles pretty well right now), and late night driving when the human driver is a little more tired than he should be. More importantly, I'm hoping that it makes the current system more reliable, in that there are now sections of certain highways that I drive on that have poor lane markings due to pothole patches and that cause the autonomy platform to sound the alarm and shut off.
Using what we currently have in stop and go traffic is pretty awesome, and it saved me from rear ending someone on the highway (two minutes before someone rear ended me).

Indeed I do. And after driving a Gen 1 loaner, I'm happy I procrastinated on pulling the trigger, even though it meant I ended up with a DM instead of my pre-order QM

Forget full self driving, I'd just like it to stay in the lane on the freeway, which it does a poor job of at the moment. (Gen 2 R1S)

And not slam on the damn brakes when it sees a damn trash can or a shadow.

Anyone hear news of when the hands free driving improvement is coming? Please don't tell me that it is here. I haven't noticed any improvement. All of Rivian software is about an order of magnitude less capable/user friendly than Tesla in my opinion. And Tesla's is still improving, increasing the gap as time progresses.

Do you have a Gen 1? If so, the answer is never. It's already here for Gen 2.

When someone merge in front of you it panics and will slam brakes instead of slowing down gently. Phantom braking, I got once or twice only so not bad. For me it stays in the lane on freeway in fact in the curves too, didn't felt wondering here and there any more. At freeway speed it keeps big gap because it's 7000 lbs. But in stop and go traffic it still maintain big gap giving some jerk to merge in because he sees the gap. It's annoying. Kia ev6 gt will keep big gap when driving. And then in stop and go traffic it will maintain bumper to bumper distance.
I moved from Gen 1 to Gen 2. Thing are improving, yes. But not at the speed where you can justify paying 100K+ for this vehical.

I can’t say that it has or anywhere close.

I don't think OP posted to elicit any responses. Neither am I.
OP is simply making a point of fact. Tesla FSD is far, far superior to anything out there in America. It is settled law, not for debate.

Whereas Tesla haters think FSD is a total, worthless POS; Tesla fanbois swear it is even better than the invention of the wheel, FSD performance lies somewhere in the middle, but it definitely and decisively is constantly drifting and marching farther and farther away from the Tesla haters side.

That self-driving may never come to R1S Gen 1 is totally fine with me. I can live without it. Not about to shell out another, what $100k just to have that feature on a Gen 2.
Keep in mind that Tesla has been at FSD for about a decade now, and it still is nowhere near full self-driving. It is euphemistically called today "supervised" self-driving.

Anybody thinking that Rivian will have full self-driving next year, or the year after, or the year after that, hands-free even, well, I'd say don't bet your house on it.

I’d be happy with Rivian just getting a lot closer to Blue Cruise and Super Cruise. It’s slowly getting better, but Blue Cruise still feels safer and smoother. (I don’t have experience with Super Cruise but the consensus seems to be that it’s pretty comparable.)
