You have 9 years to find out the size of the filter. That's the Rivian recommended service interval. This filter is in place to capture any manufacturing debris that may exist when the vehicle is new, and to capture debris if there is a failure inside the unit. It does not need routine maintenance any more than an ICE automatic transmission needs a new filter - when was the last time you replace the filter on an ICE transmission?

Nice.

I’d think a more frequent replacement may be beneficial. It’s really not comparable to an automatic transmission but rather a differential - since that’s what it is. Depending on manufacturer differentials are normally a flush and fill every 45-60k miles though I suppose with a filter like the Rivian differential the oil life could be extended.

Thanks - do you know any of the specific sizes I am after?

It's a heavily loaded final drive - so there will be in-service wear.

I have dropped a message to Sandy and will see what he comes back with on the measurements we need. Would be great to have a similar cooling/filtration product for the Rivian the same as we do with Tesla.

I replace the transmission fluid and filters on my ICE transmissions every 60-80k depending on the car. The “sealed for life” argument on transmissions means “life of car”, which for most manufacturers is 150k. If you want to get to 200k+ on a drivetrain, you have to change the fluids and filters well before the projected end of life.

There's also going to be a minor amount of contamination from wear in the disengagement mechanism that's also bathed in the same fluid. But it should effectively be a lifetime filter. You aren't heating the oil up to breakdown temps because it will destroy the motor before it gets anywhere near that.

Ok nothing from Munro. At this point in time all I need is the oil filter part number, however a lack of a Rivian EPC makes this difficult. Does anyone have a close up pic of the filter with a part number?

AH finally worth a trip down to Advance Auto/Autozone to stump the boys behind the counter!
“I need a filter for a 2023 Rivian”
Clerk: ”What’s the make of the car?”
”Rivian”
Clerk: ”Yeah, but who makes it?”
”Rivian”
Clerk: ”No, like Ford? Toyota? Nissan? Who MAKES it?”
