Our Dual Motor from Dec is on the list; our Tri motor from Jan is not (yet!)

As others have pointed out, no need to call in these situations - if going in for service, could inquire or if you have trouble, obviously contact service. Many times the plan/parts are not available for a while.

I noticed this in my Feb 2025 delivered R1S when driving yesterday late afternoon/evening in sub-freezing weather with snow coming down. While the lights were in 'auto' they did not want to turn on, just had the DRL's for most of the trip. Definitely a safety issue.

“Feb 21 (Reuters) - Rivian said on Friday it is recalling 17,260 vehicles in the U.S. due to a headlight issue that could reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects certain 2025 R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck vehicles, the company said in a report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The headlight low beam may fail to illuminate when starting the vehicle in cold weather. To fix the issue, the company said it would replace the headlight control modules at no cost to customers.”
The recall affects my 2025 R1T, although I haven't seen the issue—and it's been cold! I will see if they can do it on my 7500-mile inspection next month!

I'm not upset here. Hardly a vehicle I have owned in 55 years, many, has not had at least one recall. Like my 2003 $65k Chevy dumping diesel into the oil pan reserve! I just hate to see our emerging company have such a cost. I hope the removed lights can be retooled/recycled with a fix to reduce costs.

Mine broke on my first day of ownership. Took 3.5 weeks to repair. Glad they issued a recall.

My car was a December 4th Delivery GEn2 R1s Dual Max.

Its when they start to heat up from the cold. My whole light array failed in the middle of nowhere. I used a body shop light and a high powered flashlight to finish the last few miles of my middle of nowhere trek to home in sub zero temperatures. 0 / 10 would not recommend.

At the risk of making a joke in poor taste, maybe this is why every Rivian comes equipped with a flashlight?

This sounds like a supplier error, I would think most if not all of the recall cost should be covered by the supplier.

That sounds like all gen2s? Combined with the charging issues - it really seems like Rivian could benefit from purchasing a cold environmental chamber for their labs - they are actually surprising cheap - almost every supermarket in the country already has one… (and yes I’m saying they should test things in a walk in freezer - it’s what we used to do with grid tie inverters)

Seems like another trip to the SC is in order for le troubled trimax.
They already do cold weather research at the Honda TRC here in Ohio.....

Then how could they have missed that gen2 Max packs thermal system cannot support Level2 charging at rated capacity in cool (sub 50f) ambient temperatures, or were they aware and decided to ship anyway?

don’t worry, warranty claims and recall costs get passed down to the supplier.

"Should be covered by the supplier", just like all the 12V batts, the half-shafts, the tie rods, the air suspension components, etc.. thing is, we never find out who pays for what. But, I agree with you, if Rivian is using the part within manufacturer specified limits, then the manufacturer should pay for the replacement part and labor costs.

My R1T delivery is scheduled for March 7. Makes me wonder what the build date actually was. My VIN does not show up on the list, but maybe that's because it has not yet been delivered. Probably too much to hope that any work would get completed before delivery if there is a problem.

Update: According to my Rivian Guide, no vehicles being delivered now are affected.

I used mine when this happened LOL with a shop light and another High Power hand held. After the car started to cool off again one of them came back on. But they would keep failing.

As they figured it out over the course of 3.5 weeks (from December 4th) they said a batch of chips failed cold weather testing, but got back into the supply chain somehow.

This is actually hilarious to me:

WHY? as FORD issues a TSB because of my Mach-E sensor failure that took them 7 months to FIX. I had the car the TSB was developed on. This is why I bought the R1S because I hadn't had my EV for 5 months at that point while the FORD BEV team was figuring out how to fix my Mach E....

Then on the way home from RIVIAN on the delivery day this happened. .

I must have kicked puppies in a past life. I really don't deserve my EV misery. (The LR4 on the left was Broken and headed to the shop) ...also another reason I bought the R1S.

Not sure I've noticed that problem with my max pack. Does it happen with certain L2 chargers?
