Was on some Facebook group in my feed. I am sure that Rivian will post a video soon

The R1 is more than 50% heavier than the Jeeps. I’m sure the mechanical stresses of the components at these unusual angles/positions through the trail is also significantly higher.

A friend of mine sent me these. He was on the trail and came across the Rivian team doing some ā€œresearchā€! Would love to try it in someone else’s $80k R1!:

Some observations:

The R1S and RB R1T have some sort of sliders on them. Can’t tell if OE prototypes or just makeshift units purpose made/mounted for this excursion
The R1S is running OE Pirelli tires while the RB R1T has BFG KO2s
Receiver hitches mounted in place of the recover hoops up front on the R1S, along with a DC connector of some sort?
Winch and shortened bumpers on the R1T (as noted here and other threads)
Action cam mount on the hood of the R1S just behind the Rivian logo (so there’s definitely video, whether the public will ever see it or not)

I hope they design the bumper like Jeep (and maybe Ford too), where the bumper has user-removable ends, so you can configure it for on-road and off-road use.
You’d have to delete the radar modules in each corner of the bumper. I wouldn’t count on this being an option for most…. Unless software reconfig starts being offered. No radar modules will limit the vehicle’s speed, ask me how I know.

The R1S has zip ties strapping the front right fender moulding back onto the body —I wonder if these have been modified in some way to provide more up travel. A stock wheel shouldn’t rip off the moulding. Perhaps they ripped it off on the rock.
stock 22s, with a vehicle that won’t ā€˜un-kneel’ will rip that fender trim off without an issue.

I met some guys in that Riv Blue R1T at the Inyokern RAN and saw it again later at the Bishop RAN last October. They said it was their "recovery truck" and the KO2's were brand new at that time. It had the sliders and winch bumper on it. When I inquired, they basically said it would be much more likely to see aftermarket options for winch bumper than something from Rivian because if the manufacturer builds it, it has to be crash tested, etc. It was a great looking truck and I was on my first off-road trip in the Rivian at the time.
