Hello! Tomorrow I will be taking my first big road trip in my R1T dual motor, performance large battery. My trip is about 500 miles roundtrip. What drive mode and settings would be best? It will be about 90% freeways. All-purpose or sport? It’s a dual motor so I don’t have conserve. Ride height? Any other best practices to get the best range? Thanks!

The faster you go, the less efficient you will be. Don't accelerate hard and keep it under 65 mph. Draft behind some semi's will help a little too.

The lowest ride height is the most efficient, but it is not as comfortable.

All Purpose is more efficient than Sport.

My recommendation: All Purpose at the lowest ride height.

I have taken two 1200 mile road trips. Are there a lot of fast chargers? What I have learn is to just not care. I drive 5 miles over the speed limit. Often at 85. I drive just like a ICE.

enjoy the vehicle.

By the time I gab coffee, snack and check emails, I’m ready to go again.

my first trip was under 30 degrees. Terrible range. Second trip should have been 40’s and 50’s. 30 and snowing. Still drove 80.

let it go.

Good advice here already about the modes and getting the most range. If you haven't already planned your route and charging stops using ABRP, give it a try. I never do an EV roadtrip without it.

For a 500 Mike trip, I think charging stops should be prioritized over driving settings. Also, you can use the Riv app to plan out the trip using different drive modes.

If dual motor has conserve mode, use that. I find that stopping when I'm at 30 percent or more and charging to 80-90 percent gives me just enough time to stretch my legs, get something to eat, exercise the dog, use the bathroom, catch up on email and texts, and select a new music playlist for the next segment of drive. If you are in a big hurry to get there, alter the plan as needed. I have done about 5 long trips in my quad T and the first one was very stressful. It gets better the more you travel. If you find yourself getting low on energy, slow down and you will gain some range. Remember the 6 P's ......Prior planning prevents piss poor performance. As a Career Navy and Airline pilot it's sort of second nature for me to fuel plan all the time. Be the Pilot and enjoy the flight.

Stating the obvious, but if you've only been charging at home i.e. not using public chargers, go to your nearest charger to make sure everything works.

You don't want the first time using a public charger to be on the road when you have 5% range left and it won't charge.

After just completing a week-long ~ 1,000 mi trip from Northern VA -> Charlotte -> Lake Keowee, SC -> Blacksburg, VA -> Northern VA, I can offer this:
  • The Nav doesn’t suggest the best stops. It’s better to use apps like PlugShare to determine the optimal stop. Also cross-reference with Google Maps to see what’s nearby (e.g., food, restroom, etc).
  • The Nav estimates + “Guess-o-meter” / 2 gets you the closest number upon arrival. For example, Nav would initially say 200 mile to charger, arrive w/ 50 miles remaining, guess-o-meter would say I have 300 miles remaining on charge (suggesting I’d have 100 remaining). Arrival on Nav and guess-o-meter would say ~70 when I got there.
  • Prioritize RAN or Supercharger for ease of use. Plug & charge is much easier than dealing with funky apps.
  • If staying in a hotel, use PlugShare to see if one nearby has fee charging. Nothing like waking up to 95% charge to start the day.

Maybe unpopular option coming...

Just drive it. I noticed whether in Sport or All Purpose the total range changes by maybe 15 miles? That's won't impact me since I'm not trying to get down to that range before charging. Height also doesn't seem to impact much so I keep it in All Purpose so it is comfy for the family (otherwise I'm always in Sport). Also, pretty much everyone has the Tesla adapter now and Superchargers are literally everywhere. I don't even worry anymore. If you have to stop and fast charge every few hundred miles, then just grab a snack/drink/watch YouTube on the screen for 20 minutes and you're on your way again.

The only thing I'd do the night before is charge to 90+ percent to have that little extra range to start.

As others have said, if you're really trying to extend range, don't speed. Not as fun, but if you're under 70-75mph, your efficiency goes up a lot. Personally I like to drive fast :p so that's out for me.
