Is there any benefit in getting a rooftop tent for a family of 5 with the R1S? We would get something like the Thule Approach Large for the kids and my wife and I would sleep in the car. Mostly do trips to local national parks around California such as Yosemite, Zion, Joshua Tree, Sequoia, Sedona, and smaller camp sites like Big Sur and Montana de Oro.

Three kids in the RTT would work depending on size of tent and size of kids. A ground tent is a whole lot cheaper, a whole lot bigger and won’t tank your range.

Decided against getting a rooftop:
- Not interested in leaving it on top (due to range). Or taking it on or off regularly.
- Better to leave the tent at the base camp.

We came to a similar conclusion for the R1T and our family of four (considered a solution where one of us sleeps in the truck). As cool as RTTs are, for a fraction of the cost, we can get a pretty nice tent that fits the family and probably also an upright piano.

Another option to consider is the “suv tent”, which attach to the rear of the suv , making a bigger enclosed space. You usually can leave those freestanding as well

Benefits of the rooftop tent I have experienced:

1 - setup is literally seconds with RTT. Just opens up. Same for tear down, just folds back up.
2 - Floor is flat and solid and not cold, with a real mattress
3 - No floor water concerns, ground critters, and less dirt in tent since it's not on the ground
4 - Doesn't require clearing a spot to setup

we ordered this family tent for our camping needs (2 adults, 2 young kids)

they also make an inflatable insulated tent that goes inside it that we will purchase later - still waiting on the tent to arrive to test how it works.

I will also add that rtt can get you into some RV parks vs a ground tent
