I’m in south central PA and the closest service center (currently) is in Gaithersburg, MD, which is 2 hours away. For the reason, I’m a little concerned with how any frequent issues might derail my ownership experience.
R1T owner since June '22 that lived 2hrs away from 2 service centers, and only recently got one that is only 45 minutes away. There were a handful of issues early on that required me to head in like a few recalls and a half shaft fix (Plymouth, MI SC and Chicago, IL SC - 2 hours) and a visit to another SC to look at a goof from a previous SC (Madison Heights, MI - 2.5 hours). They were annoying, but very few trips. While I was at the Chicago SC, there were a few R1 owners that had issues while traveling with kids and Rivian towed their vehicles to the SC. One was for a blown tire on an R1S.

I've only had one issue that would have prevented driveability, 12V battery warning, and that was resolved with the new SC 45 minutes away and I was able to drive in basically next day. Outside of that, my experience has been great and I think that has been the same for a majority of owners but there will be a risk with any vehicle from any OEM. Based on what I read on this forum, I would still buy it.

Yes you should get one.

R1S 2024 Quad.
Yes. The vehicle is fantastic. Having said that, although I haven’t had issues yet, it’s probably only a matter of time as things can happen especially with a new company. But I knew that going in that there will be some give and take, delays etc

Two hours away from a sc is much better than many of us and many of those are happy customers.

Yes, you should. I've had mine since September 2023 and no major issues. It's been in for very minor things. It's a great vehicle. All the best.

yes, get one. Maybe Gen 2 for the driveability uldates on an S. I have a 4mo old T and just put on 2k miles road tripping. It performed perfectly. My only gripes are trying to track down some interior rattles.

I‘m in SE PA and we now have Trenton open and rumored to get one in Malvern. If your initial delivery quality is good, you should be fine.

Does it help my office 2 mins away from Miami service center and 15 mins away from home? I have a gen 2 R1S on order. A couple of months ago I wasn’t thinking EV much less a Rivian. Once I started seeing their leases actually be good I took a demo drive. The rest is history. I need a 3 row SUV for the kids. 2023 XC90 lease ends in 2 months. I’m ready to go EV. What I liked about the R1S was space and storage. It’s a in between a mid size suv and full size. It’s perfect. For demo drive I did take my kids. I liked the space and comfort they had. I plan to charge at home.

Feb 2024 Delivery, about 7,000 miles. We had the 12V battery drain and bricking issue in week 3, but otherwise no other problems. It's a great vehicle and keeps getting better with each update. My only suggestion is to research the R1 accident/repair costs and check your insurance rate before you pull the trigger. I bet the national average with a good record is still around $200 a month. I'm paying $500 a month just for our R1S, but I'm in CA with teenagers and an accident on my account. The point being, EVERYTHING about the R1 repair wise is outrageously expensive to fix and I think the insurance companies are still getting their heads around it and thus rates will only go higher from here. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if ultimately the R1's became completely uninsurable, like a house in a fire zone (at least for comprehensive coverage that is).

I have owned my R1T going on 2 years / 16K miles. I've been to two different SCs, Cleveland and Columbus, both 3 hours away. The first time was for minor adjustments of the hood and replacement of the driver's triangle window a few months after delivery. The second time was to fix the jammed up power tonneau cover. The third time was a cracked windshield replacement from a rock thrown up by a semi changing lanes. The last time was last week when they replaced the PTC with a brand new one. The work performed on my truck were always exemplary, and the techs have always been professional. Booking service appointments at either SC - ranges from 2 days to 2 weeks time. I have been a long time Porsche owner and my Rivian service experiences have been better than with Porsche.

So I’ve been looking at the R1S for a while and I love the way it looks, as well as what I’ve seen it do. That said, I’m curious what everyone’s experience is with the frequency of issues that prevent drivability or require a service center visit?

I’m in south central PA and the closest service center (currently) is in Gaithersburg, MD, which is 2 hours away. For the reason, I’m a little concerned with how any frequent issues might derail my ownership experience.

That said, otherwise the size, design, range, performance and cost effectiveness fit my lifestyle better than other EV’s.

So I’d love to hear opinions/experiences on ownership.

It seems like the consensus is that most of the issues have not been urgent issues, some require the service center and the wait time can be a little annoying, but owning the vehicle is still well worth it

Live in MD and go to Gaithersburg SC on occasion but never for anything urgent, had my R1S for almost 2 years now and Id do it all over again if I had too ( granted the quad pricing at the time was unbeatable).

You have to drive it with your significant others. If you love the motion, acceleration and the possibility of going off road, by all means get one. If you or your family members are subject to motion sickness and you don't need the off road capabilities it may not be for you. You can get a used quad 4 for a great price. It is a bucket list experience. You stop wanting any other car.

Have an R1T since September 2022 - absolutely love it. No real issues. Service center had to tow it to SC to replace air bags - they provided a rental while they had it. Otherwise, just rotate tires every 5000 miles and add wiper fluid. Placed reservation on day one for R2S for my wife.
