He left out the small details... it happens all the time with major announcements. Reference anything Elon says for instance.

As I mentioned earlier, people have dissected current Rivian vehicles.. there is no satellite antenna on any current Rivian vehicle at this time.
I believe you. It would make the reps statement highly misleading and bordering on fraudulent. People use XM specifically for that satellite technology. It is the same reason I use the cars 'dumb' GPS maps instead of Google Maps because they just stop working when the data goes

Here are photos of the actual components under the Rivian Sharkfin Antenna..

In the first photo you can see one side of the board is clearly labeled "LTE Connectivity / LTE Monopole V02" which 100% confirms it's simply a Cell antenna for LTE signals. The other side of the board is just some copper traces... no sat antenna there.

So how could the XM rep say XM will be available everywhere the Rivian goes when clearly that isn't true with a data plan?
Q: How could Elon Musk say the CyberTruck has near infinite towing capacity?
A: Quite comfortably.

Caveat Emptor.

Based on the positive responses in this thread so far, it would seem otherwise. Any time "wasted" was likely minimal, and it probably creates a new revenue stream for RIvian.

Poor focus? RIvian has always stated that they wanted to build out a suite of end to end integrated apps. This fits that statement, so how is this poor focus?
Colossal waste of fixed amount of software development resources when all that is necessary is to support AA and CP and then you support Sirius/XM, Waze, (a *REAL* navigation system), and two dozen other apps. DONE. Moving on to actual REAL priorities.

Same here, I canceled all actual sat based services as the sat feed quality sucks nowadays due to aging batteries and xponders on their two sats and them placing too many channels on each xponder.

I also negotiated with them for Streaming Only (it works on my desktop PC and phone) and pay only $5/month as well.
More stations are available via streaming service too.

Except we don't know what the breakdown of resources would be for one vs. the other do we? Adding CP/AA also requires expenditure of resources.
Which would add 30+ apps as compared to reinventing the wheel for EVERY app integration like Spotify, Audible, TuneIn, etc.

Could have already been done in less time than reinventing all those wheels.

I get it; it's a pain to have to threaten to cancel to get the best rate every 6 months. But I'm kinda the opposite, I don't want to choose exactly what I listen to. I want to pick a genre and be spoon fed
Which your get with Spotify. Really the only SXM differentiators are Stern and sports le (NFL, MLB, ESPN, etc.). All of the music channels and recommendations Spotify has and then some.

It would be different if we were talking about an actual satellite antenna based service but you know it will just be another streaming infotainment app.

Again, we have no idea how much time or resources Rivian committed to developing the apps they already offer vs. what adding CP/AA would require.

Rivian has stressed from the beginning they want to remain in control of their software stack and the user experience. I’m not an expert on software applications, but having owned a couple vehicles with CP in them, it is CP that becomes the main experience for the user, not the native system. So I have to assume Rivian is against adding it because of that or because it actually requires more work or resources than some claim. Maybe both?

All I’ve said is we don’t know… We know more apps are coming, but they are doing a good job keeping that secret. We’ll see??‍♂

Well, I've got 33.5+ years of professional software engineering experience, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that it's less effort to integrate 2 apps (AA and CP) than 30+.

With the libraries, APIs and pre-existing code this could be a 6 to 10 week effort for one or two developers. For all we know, SXM may have even funded it as part of the deal. Deals like that are common. Colossal waste of fixed amount of development resources? Highly unlikely.

I'm certainly not trying to minimize your experience, or anyone else's. I simply offered a couple possible explanations based on what we have heard from Rivian. People keep acting like they haven't addressed the subject many times in the past.

You're missing the point. If they had invested the effort in AA and CP then SXM would ALREADY have been integrated with or without a Rivian deal AND they wouldn't have had to waste time reinventing the wheel with Spotify, Audible, TuneUn , and every other future app that has LESS functionality than the AA/CP equivalent apps.

So, even before this SXM deal the decision to not support AA/CP resulting in a COLOSSAL waste of expensive software engineering effort.

Not missing the point. I simply understand and accept that Rivian made a long term, strategic business decision years ago to do the full stack themselves as a long term investment and to monetize it. They made that clear years ago. Others refuse to accept it and say if, shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Does anyone know if this will be available in Canada as well? All of the verbiage on the press release, and from Rivian just state US specifically.
