Apologies if this topic has been addressed. I have had XM Satellite Radio since 2003. Driving across the country from Atlanta to California in 2000, I saw a billboard out in the middle of nowhere in Nevada or Arizona that said, "If you had XM satellite radio, you'd be listening to something right now!". Clicked seek on the car I was driving at the time and it searched for hours before finding any radio station, AM or FM.
From that point forward, I've had XM Radio, first installed on my 03 Infiniti G35 6MT sedan. Cars and even my motorcycles had an XM tuner on them. I can deal without Apple CarPlay on the Rivian, however, the point of satellite radio, you have connectivity and far clearer signal when it's not pulling a signal from cellphone towers. There is a difference when it switches back and forth, especially through tunnels. I was excited to hear XM was coming to Rivian, but was disappointed to find out it's streaming over cellular.
The whole point of "Satellite Radio" you maintain connectivity way out off the beaten path and outside of cell service. 100 miles outside of Phoenix on 93 heading to Vegas, around Bagdad, there is no cell service and would not get XM or Spotify streaming for over 30 minutes and can be spotty up to I-40 just east of Kingman as an example. XM "satellite" is the only thing I get in that area. That is a disappointment and wish there could be a tuner and antenna integration into the roof antenna as in my other cars.
Are there any plans to add the tuners and antennas and UI/UX integration into the main screen in the future to Rivian Vehicles to be true satellite not solely cellular based? Coming from a long term Sirius XM customer. It is a big feature I look for in every car I own and I'm on the R2 reservation list.
