I've been a fan of the Tesla UWC since I installed them in July. I have one in my garage and one on the outside. The built in J1772 connector on the outside unit recently froze in the housing since we've had snow and a lot of sub-freezing temperatures over the past couple weeks. I was still able to pull the NACS wand out and use a standalone J1772 adapter to charge, but the button on the built-in adapter would not release the assembled connector from the housing. I pulled the NACS wand out and took a battery powered heat gun to apply heat to the built-in adapter for about 10-15 seconds, then reinserted the wand. With a little jostling, the assembled connector came free. I noticed a thin layer of ice had built up around the adapter.
I did a little searching and some people have had similar issues over on the Tesla Motors Club forum, so I guess this is something to be aware of. Seems like a design flaw for units mounted outside. If you already carry a NACS>>J1772 adapter you can be prepared to still charge if you don't have a heat gun handy, but if you experience the same issue, this is one thing to try before calling Tesla.
