Hey all. Have my R1T for 45 days. Gen 2. Today I noticed the tonneau cover would not open. Screen shows it as open but it’s actually closed, when I tap the infotainment screen or the button outside, it makes a brief motor sound and says ‘object detetcted’ on the screen which made me think it’s a sensor issue. Tried both soft and hard resets as well as holding down the open button. Nothing gives. Other remedies I should try?

Darn. Was hoping there was some magical reset procedure just for the tonneau.

I’m just not convinced it’s physically stuck.

The vehicle obviously thinks the tonneau is open when it’s actually closed. So, when the button is pressed, it moves forward instead of back and hits the end of the rail, hence the object detected message.

I’ve had a few instances of the tailgate thinking it was open when it was closed. Perhaps there’s a larger sensor issue around the bed area?

At any rate, if anyone else has had this issue and got it resolved, I’d appreciate heat what the fix was.

If somehow we could tell, no you’re closed buddy so go in the other direction…
There is a calibration routine. I don't remember if it's in the manual, or if you have to initiate it from the RiDE menu but I have seen the system prompt for it in certain conditions.

Unfortunately, calibration didn’t work. Open to other ideas!
On the plus side, you can probably get the new V2 tonneau that is quieter, smoother, and surely must be a more durable design. You may have to do some arm twisting, but I imagine they would rather replace V1/V1.2 with V2 since replacement labor/logistics surely costs more than just recycling all the unused V1.2s.

Yeah, V2 would be nice. That said, I don’t believe the tonneau or its motorized components are broken. See a video I just shot of the problem.

As you’ll see, the vehicle display shows the cover is open but it‘s really closed. When I press the button, because the vehicle thinks the cover is open, it moves forward towards the liftgate. Of course, the cover is already right up against the liftgate so it stops and the display says ‘object detected’.

So, the issue seems to be that the vehicle doesn’t know what the real status of the tonneau cover is. It doesn’t seem to be a spring/motor/track malfunction.

Have you tried pressing the button and assisting it by either pushing or pulling? Mine sometimes doesn't close all the way and starts to retract when almost closed, so I get it a little assisted pull near the end.

Try pushing it while pressing the button.

I have not tried that. I may…

However, if I did, that would mean I’d be pushing the cover in the opposite direction it’s going. The motor is pushing the cover towards the liftgate even though the cover is closed and I’d be pushing it the other way towards the cabin. Not sure that would generate anything else than the current ‘object detected’ error message.

If it's broke, it's broke, I don't think you'll be hurting anything trying different things. So give it a tug, or a push, or mess with it.

Oh man. I feel silly. Had tried the reset procedure yesterday but I think I was pausing too much between the presses. Watched a YouTube short this AM demoing it and realized I was doing it wrong. Just did it again, and the problem is solved! For anyone needing the reset in the future, the presses really need to be successive. No pauses. Many thanks all for jumping in and helping me out.

That's awesome! That's good to know for the future, if this ever happens to me (I've never had to reset mine).

Thanks! For 2 days I have had the exact same problem as SteilKurve. I called Rivian and they had me to a hard reset (which I had already done). When that didnt work, they booked a service appointment for May. Not sure why they didn't walk me through the Tonneau cover reset.
It worked for me too!
