Curious if anyone has actually had the conversation with a Guide or has had delivery of their Rivian and completed the process of trading in their current vehicle for their Rivian yet? Im guessing Rivian is outsourcing that to a 3rd party?

There is an earlier thread about this you can search.

The bottom line, however, is it's probably going to be better to privately sell your car even if you live somewhere that allows you to apply the trade in sales tax credit. Used car prices are very high and it's unlikely the offer from "Rivian" will be competitive.

KBB trade in value for “Good condition” for my Ram is $67,000. Maryland sales tax is 6%. That’s a $4000 delta to make it worthwhile to sell on my own. I guess we’ll see what kind of offer I get from Rivian.

I think @Taycanfrank may have been referring to a a private party sale, not a trade-in. The former is marked as high effort but higher value on KBB if I recall correctly.

I will have to do this dance too when my R1S eventually arrievs since the sales tax of over 10% in WA will lead to an even bigger delta to make up.

Between tax and ease of process, I'm planning to have them load my Defender up on the truck they drop my R1T off on (or preferably, drive it over to Bellevue so I don't have to take delivery on downtown Seattle streets).

It's impossible to say definitively until we start getting more info but I tend to think Rivian will be giving very low trade in offers. Dealerships have a lot more incentive to offer decent trade in value, whereas a company like Rivian is only doing it because they have to.

I'd be surprised, maybe shocked, if anyone sees as high as a KBB "Good condition" trade in offer from Rivian. I expect it to come in at 2-5% below that, which makes private party the most valuable route by a good margin. But just speculation of course.

It definitely depends on what car you have but if it's something that's in any demand you'll likely make thousands more from a private party sale. At least you would today, we'll see if the car market starts coming back to reality.

Tesla was giving very aggressive trades, but then again...that was for another Tesla.

Why don’t you use my cul de sac in North Seattle for the swap. While it’s here, we can swap the badging on my LR3 with the Defender and they’ll never know the difference…
