Hi Folks,

I have mentioned on here my desire to trade-in our Model Y for an R1S to go with our R1T, given our eldest getting to teen years and needing more space for sports, etc. Of course, our desire to ditch the Tesla has been enormously exacerbated by the past 6 weeks, but I won’t get into that.

As much as I would love a Gen2, we can’t swing that having just gotten a Gen2 T in September.

I first tried for a demo or Rivian used because of warranty, but there’s not a lot available and Rivian won’t ship used or demo so it was looking like my driving from Maine to at least Virginia if not Florida to pickup, and even then, pricing was not great.

I was weary of a personal sale, and even a used dealer honestly. So I found one at another luxury brand dealer and wanted thoughts on price/setup.

It is an early VIN Launch Edition Quad with 56k miles. After negotiating down about $6k, it’s at $59k.

I generally feel like this is a decent price when I consider how expensive a Gen2 Quad will be when it drops this year. I acknowledge this is not apples to apples, but it will be roughly twice the price.

My only concern is the mileage. It’s a single owner who traded it into his local dealership for their new luxury EV. No issues, no accidents, etc.

But still, it’s closing in on basic warranty.

I’m planning on immediately scheduling an appointment at my local SC to make sure it gets checked up before I’m out of warranty, but any other questions or considerations I might be missing or not aware of with Gen1?

Thanks!!

I think it is too high given the miles. It is almost out of the bumper to bumper 5/60 warranty. Use autotempest.com to search.

I found this one possibly up in your area. Expand your search area and more options.

Thanks! I have been using autotempest. While I’m pretty flexible, can’t deal with white exterior and white seats for my family of 5 plus dog.

I guess I should also say we drive a lot up here, so the mileage becomes less of an issue timeline wise (unless I found something with under 10k miles for a good price) for me in the grand scheme of things as I drive about 20k+ miles/year with our primary family hauler.

Remember your paying slightly more for a demo from Rivian because your getting full new car warranty because it’s able to be sold as a new car.

for example, if you buy a 2023 R1S gen 1 with 7500 miles on it as a demo you will have an extra 7500 miles warranty or an extra 2 years depending on when it was produced. It will also be a one owner vehicle.

if you purchase the same vehicle used you have less warranty and you will not be the first owner so resale will be less.

depends on how long you plan to keep it if the extra cost of a demo is worth it over a used example.

I would love some insight into the various options for the LE. Did they all come with underbody shields or was that optional? Any way to know if it’s there from the VIN or otherwise? Dealers obviously don’t know a lot about these items.

I was open to a demo but mostly there haven’t been any on the East coast or any R1S in the US for over a month at this point. Feeling like they’re mostly moved at this point possibly.

It is a good price for the condition... but to me $60k is too high for a car with no warranty left. Personally Id opt to pay just a little more and get a newer car with a lot less miles.

For the right spec, miles, year, and price.. I would not be against traveling pretty much anywhere in the country. In fact I have.

I bought a Cadillac Escalade for rather cheap. Thought it was going to be the vehicle for me... 3 months later, I sold it, for double what I paid for it.

In certain regions of the country, vehicles are more affordable than others, so I had an advantage on that one.

That said, 60k for one that has almost 60k miles. Thats dealership over priced.

Launch Editions could have the underbody shield if it was ordered with it. Mine was not.

Worst case scenario, you find one in the spec you want, and have it shipped to you. Some dealers will ship as part of the deal. Just have to find the right spec, and contact them.

The big thing to watch out for is branded titles. I work with them fairly often, and while its ok for the legacy automakers, who simply dont care on the service side. Tesla, and Rivian do care, and may not, or will not, work on a branded title vehicle. I know Tesla has a huge hang up on that.

This one is listed at a Benz dealer. Most Benz dealers are used to shipping cars to customers all over the country. Low miles, and almost the same price.

Or just turn it into a vacation of sorts. Go see the beaches in Tampa for a week in your new-to-you Rivian, and drive it home. Or get it shipped. Hell you could even Amtrak Auto Train it part of the way, From Sanford, FL to Washington DC (Lorton, VA). Then drive the remaining 600 miles.
