Have there been any public statements from Rivian regarding what they will do with LTE going forward? Specifically, how long are they going to pay for access to Spotify, Nav and any other app that requires a connection? I can't imagine that they plan to pick up the tab indefinitely.

On the latest Weekly Rivian Responds thread on the Rivian subreddit they posted the following:

  • We still don’t have any pricing info on RAN or the membership cost for things like cellular data. Is there an update here?
    • We’ll introduce pricing at Rivian Adventure Network charging sites in the coming months. In-vehicle connectivity (hotspot) will be complimentary through the end of this year, and we’ll share more details including pricing closer to then.

If they see connectivity as a revenue stream, that could explain their desire to keep all of the apps native and avoid CarPlay/AA. They would miss out on that that revenue if we were dependent on our own phone plans. And no I'm not trying to start a CP/AA debate. It just makes sense to follow the dollar when looking for an explanation.

What are other manufacturers charging for the LTE connectivity today?

Tesla is $10/month or $99 for the year. They've included NAV connectivity for 8 years as standard. But if you want to stream, you pay.

This is almost certainly the long term plan. Here's a good article about it.

"Many OEMs have struggled with connectivity or related software developments, resulting in poor customer reviews and delayed start of production. Only a few get the software-defined car right, and even fewer fully monetize vehicle data. Those companies that do successfully differentiate themselves focus on three important activities:

  • providing end-to-end access to 1 to 2 terabytes of raw data per car each day to enable continuous product and service improvements
  • focusing on monetization throughout the vehicle life cycle through recurring revenues from monthly subscriptions, such as those for premium connectivity services, and paid over-the-air (OTA) upgrades, which may eventually include those related to full-self-driving capabilities
  • bringing services from the idea stage to vehicle integration in up to six weeks using dedicated end-to-end teams—a strategy that has helped some players, especially new OEMs specializing in electric vehicles (EVs), achieve record-high valuations, even though their sales are a fraction of the sales of their much larger peers"

So if revenue is their plan here, then surely they won't allow tethering from our phones. Just like CP/AA, that would defeat the whole purpose. They better tread lightly here. There is enormous opportunity to reap ill will amongst the customer base when all of this hits the fan.

Way back they'd quoted $5500 for subscriptions outside of self driving. Their last earnings also said something about this but I forget exact numbers.

Prior quote:
Rivian told the SEC it expects to generate $15,500 in extra income per vehicle over its expected 10 year useful life — $10,000 for the Level 3 self driving package and an additional $5,500 for all those other subscription add ons.

If they want to charge me for data - they can pay for all their data too. They won't get free access to my home wifi anymore.

They can charge all they want for self driving. I'm not interested. But boy will it suck to have to pay for ANOTHER data plan just to listen to Spotify when I'd rather be listening to (and seeing on a screen) Apple Music via my phone.

Streaming Apple music with your phone over Bluetooth will not require LTE data.

Sadly the future is going to be paying for LTE connectivity if you want it. Until they announce what those plans look like it is pointless to get worked up about it. And lets be clear Rivian isn't alone, all the major companies will be doing this sooner or later.

Other than Tesla, what other manufacturer is denying CP/AA and forcing its users to pay for LTE to stream content? That's the rub.

Based on what others charge for data, it probably doesn't cost Rivian more than $5/month. That is only $600 over 10 years. And most of these vehicles won't last 10 years so even if it is a bit more than $5/month the total cost is probably about right.

On vehicles this expensive, they should be able to include a lifetime of data use into the purchase price. I would happily pay an extra $600 up front to avoid having to think about subscriptions.

Seems GM is soon to follow based on their recent announcement.

Id like CP as much as you but even today I use Apple Music for 99% of music streaming in my R1T, you’ll only have to pay if you want to use Spotify, Tidal etc in the native app

We shall see what they do with D+ and Nav but that is a problem for the future.

Today there is no rubbing…

GM is going to drop CarPlay/AA from their EV lineup. They haven't yet said whether there will be a subscription cost associated with features that require a cell data connection like Spotify.
