I have preorder pricing, but a moderate liberal arts salary, so I’m looking at preowned Rivians and considering their resale value down the line.

The process has me wondering what the value floor might be for R1’s, especially Quads with Meridian sound, less than 300,00 miles and less than 20 years.

I’m familiar with the common pattern of a vehicle losing 30% in the first year and 10% a year for most years after that.

However, I just don’t see such a powerful truck/suv ever going for $20,000. Somewhere I feel like there’s a floor that won’t be crossed. After all, it’s faster than a MacLaren F1, with frequent updates, tons of innovation, and batteries that’ll go for decades if cared for well.

Do you think R1’s will have a value floor, or will they continue to depreciate like normal Vehicles?

Interesting question, lots of variables at play for example condition of the R1, inflation over next 20 years, technological innovation, etc.

There is definite time element associated with battery degradation so it could well be that original battery will be nearly kaput after 20 years. I think at a minimum their would be decent scrap value in a >7K pound truck. I voted for $15K assuming it's drivable with at least 150 mile range and in ok condition.

I'm thinking I will keep my 2022 LE R1T for 6 years and 150K miles before trading into whatever the new flagship R1T is in 2028. Hoping the Launch Edition will still have some value but understanding that buying new performance vehicles is not done for financial benefit by a long shot.

My belief is an R1 will mimic a Range Rover as it goes out of various warranties.
We had a RR and if that's true you won't be able to give it away. As far as long-term value, the only "history" we could use is a Tesla. Look at that value curve.

What value does 20 yrs old laptops or PCs have?

Any EV will be completely outdated, technology-wise, including the motor, batteries. While 5 yrs old R1 w/300k miles probably will hold decent value, in 20 yrs, and high milage probably equates to e-waste...

Too early to tell what the floor will be. We have to wait and see battery degradation results over time. In some vehicles, like early Prius's for instance.. the batts do wear out over time, but they are easily replaceable (even by backyard mechanics) at reasonable prices. No backyard mechanic will be replacing any Rivian battery pack.

Those batteries aren't easy to dispose and the scrap value could be slightly negative at 20 years ?

A perfectly preserved R1 in 20 yrs with only 20 miles is still going to be worth no more than its scrap value. Remains to be seen what, if any, 2nd life options for battery packs become reality or what the recycled value would be with a company like Redwood - and whether any of that value actually winds up in the pockets of the consumer.

So all those old carburated ICE vehicles are worthless, right?

There are legions of pro and self-taught mechanics that can rebuild a carburetor or add a big bore kit to increase HP.

But the modern electronics, software, security measures and the unfamiliarity with electric powertrains, means the next generation of modders will likely be smaller that the previous generation and doing lifestyle upgrades rather than powertrain improvements.

This is exactly what "everyone" claimed in the 80s regarding that newfangled fuel injection and computer ignition.

The issue is the replacement cost is going to come down.

Gen 2 is already cheaper than Gen 1. Sure its price to the consumer is not but to Rivian it is.

R2 and R3 are going to be cheaper as well.

Sure consumers will have to give up things like air suspension but I believe air suspension is liability to anyone who wants low operating cost long term

It's high volume (relatively) vehicle so its never going to have that uniqueness quality to help it retain value. It also won't go the way of an Ocean Fisker because there will be so many vehicles on the roads that service will be available from some vendor even if Rivian goes under sometime in the next 20 years.

The big unknown is the battery value as we don't know what will become of battery technology or even how well a 20 year old battery with 300,000 will work.

In any case I imagine a 19 year old Rivian with just under 300K miles will likely be in the $5K range. Where its floor value is largely set by raw materials.
