As I'm sure you are all aware, the R1T and R1S pricing in Canada is absolutely insane compared to the US, with similar configurations often costing 20%-30% more in Canada, on top of the conversion from USD to CAD.

Living in BC, where Rivian has a Canadian Offices, service centers and a Rivian Space, why limit vehicle sales due to insanely high pricing? I'm sure there are lots of people in Canada (including myself) that would snatch up an R1S or R1T if we could get USA pricing .

Basically Rivian doesn't see Canada as a market they want to deal with. I'm surprised we get them at all.

No gear shop, very little service (4 centers in the entire country) and insane pricing.

It's unfortunate as areas such as BC really have an environment that really aligns with the "Adventure" lifestyle that Rivian is known for. Hopefully that changes before the R2 launch, as I can see that vehicle being a huge seller in Canada.

Not sure I agree with your assessment, when Tesla started they didn’t have that many SC as well. Even in the US, when I got my R1T there was only a handful of SCs in US. As far as the price, I just compared Tesla M3 dual and in Canada, the price is at least 25% higher after conversion with the current high conversion rate.

Double check that. That's with rebates.

A model 3 dual motor AWD is $47,490 in the US with exchange rate it would be $62,000 cdn.

But it's actually $59,900

Tesla has historically just followed conversion rates in Canada. Before we had any rebates the pricing was actually in USD converted and updated very often to reflect exchange

I used to work for a large company in the US a few years ago. I love Canada and tried to expand our footprint there but no-one was interested. Apparently they saw the cost-benefit of it not working in their favour. Given that Rivian is still a relatively new company, that might be the reason. I hope one day Rivian does make a better effort of it though.

In the grand scheme of things Canada sales for most car manufacturers is 10% of their US sales.

It's almost not worth it for Rivian, if that's currently only say 5000 a year or less

the intended market for these vehicles in BC can definitely afford them.

Haven’t compared pricing, but this is pretty much all retail. Canada supports higher prices, for whatever the “true” reasons…

I have given up on the R1. The first gen was outdated two years ago and now, between an underwhelming driving experience and Rivian pretty much end of life’ing it with the Gen2, not a convincing product. And the Gen 2 is ridiculously priced.

Starting at 120k to almost 200K is pretty much laughable. If I had 200K for a new BEV, Rivian is on the bottom of my list for a lot of reasons.
So the R1 is a ‘no thanks Rivian’ from me.

I have a pre-order for the R2, but I have zero confidence Rivian will hit the 45K (US) pricing.

Well, they are on record on their website as advertising CDN pricing for R2 starting at $66500 but given their history I don't think anyone will expect them to convert from US pricing at the going 'official' rate.

But to your larger point, I completely agree Rivian's Canadian pricing has been a major source of aggravation given how significantly inflated it has been compared to the official conversion rate.

The horrible pricing they use (again, compared to the official conversion any given day) applies not just to the base price, but to all options anyone might want. And it really is a disservice when their (at least partially self inflicted) Canadian pricing cannot help but have a negative impact on demand in Canada. After all, it doesn't just pump up the price of the vehicle / accessories, etc. but also pushes some trims into higher taxation rates & luxury taxes than they should be if the currency was converted at official rates.

The GVWR exempts R1 vehicles from luxury tax.

Lack of availability hurts their marketshare more than pricing does. There are still giant chunks of canada where rivian flat out won't sell you a vehicle.

Which is also weird given how many (unsold) vehicles they have sitting at the BC service center right now. A lot.
