Why no max pack for the quad motor R1S ?

So they just announced a Max pack for the R1S with a dual motor configuration. I don't Understand why they would not offer it for the Quad?
Is it a space issue? I feel like a quad motor max pack config would be the holy grail...

1.Profit margin and decreasing Rivian's losses. The enduro is house made and therefore likely cheaper than the quad Bosch units.

If it helps, it is likely you will have better offload performance than a quad motor from what people post on the margins as at least half the tires CAN spin at exactly the same rate.

And with 0-60 in 3.5 with the software upgrade I don't think you are missing much.

2.It is more efficient so also helps them get to the 390/400 mile range.

I suspect ppl who get it will love it. Happy with my quads but this thing is just a beast.

Packaging issue for sure. Original Rivian plan was to use the space where the third row is for additional battery in the R1S, but they aren't doing that now.

Packaging ? so dual vs quad motor space may be the limiting factor?

The issue people raise is that quad motors cannot truly mimic the behavior of a differential in some low traction situations. (Note that I am not referring only to a locked differential). A further, but less well-proven quad limitation is that the truck can only put the power of a single motor to any given tire, and a single enduro motor may have more power than a single Bosch.

Despite being able to configure an R1T quad motor max pack back in the day Rivian is now not going to build that configuration so makes sense they won't offer an R1S quad motor max pack either.

Thank you for all the replies. I am listed as a Q3 delivery 2023 so I don’t even know if I will have an option. For me, it would be difficult to choose between the quad versus the dual with the longer range. I am not an off-roader But I’ve always liked the idea of a quad set up. But the added. Range is extraordinarily appealing.

Quad Large in the R1S is only 40+ miles of range short of the Dual Max, so keep that in mind. I went Quad Large R1T because the larger battery didn't have enough gains to justify the added cost.

Keep in mind right now they are not offering a Quad Max R1T either. All the arguments about space are possibly correct but who knows what the future brings, my guess neither comes until Rivian designs their own house built quad motor system.
