In other threads, someone measured the distance from the bottom of the back of the rear seats to the plastic where the liftgate should end. This measurement came to a little longer than 36”

Has anyone measured the distance roughly from the back of the seats to a closed liftgate both at the top of the seats and the bottom (expect less at the top)?
Has anyone measured the distance With the rear seats down to the closed liftgate? I’ve read this was supposed to be ~72”

Basically, I’m looking for something like these volume measurements (noting it looks like the 81” length is from the top of the carpet on the back of the 2nd row seats

I measured the R2 rear cargo area on 6/12/2026 (VIN 462) with the rear seats up because I wanted to know if the WeatherTech in my Jeep will fit the R2, as currently there are no cargo area protective mats.

The width (side to side) is 41".
The depth (front to rear) is 36" (lift gate up).
I did not measure the height.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I think the 75 inches mentioned by Mos Eisley is closer to the truth than the 81” in the OP’s pic.

There have been several over 6-feet-tall individuals who have tried lying down in the back of the R2, but had to lie diagonally to make it work.

I’m 6’ tall, so I might be able to just fit. If I’m going to go car camping with my wife I think we’ll probably need a rooftop tent. I wonder how much the Rivian treehouse will cost?

81” is the R1S…

this is where I’m caught. If it is 72” or less with the liftgate closed I may opt still for the R1S, especially since I’m in the backlog.

Ah, I see. An article back in April said this:

“Rivian's head of design, Jeff Hammoud, noted at the SXSW 2026 reveal that a 95th-percentile male, roughly six-foot-two, can stretch out full length inside with the rear seats folded, turning the R2 into a genuine car-camping platform.”

But during the latest R2 event several YouTubers who were over 6 feet said they wouldn’t fit unless they were diagonal. We just need someone that has an R2 already to measure for us.

yea... then I found this guy who said they were "only" 5'8" which is kind of why I wanted liftgate closed measurments cause his feet seems like they would be kicking it (and no can see his noggin)

We just did a demo drive yesterday and should have brought a tape measure with us. We'd be replacing a 4Runner and one of semi-common things it's used for is hauling wood (sheet goods and hardwards). A 4x8 sheet of plywood will fit in the back of our 4Runner (lift gate up). But I don't believe it will fit in the back of R2 just from eyeballing it.

Other than that, the cargo space seemed pretty similar and with the frunk and cubby under the compact spare area, the R2 may have slightly more usable cargo volume.

It won't not lying flat anyway: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...at-width-space-measurements.40272/post-725734
