SanDisk Extreme Pro 1 TB SSD. Probably return it either way just to see if Samsung T7 Shield does it as well.
I have the SanDisk Extreme 1TB in the R2 and it works fine (I pulled it from my R1T temporarily while I source another drive). I am not sure if it is the "Pro" or not, I didn't look that closely.

I too will get a Samsung T7 Shield since reviews suggest better durability.

Holy moly $$$$$!

How long would a 128GB drive record for, approximately? Obviously this depends on how much you drive (for road cam) and how often motion cam is triggered, but empirically, how much history are people getting on their drives? Wondering if I need more than the 128GB minimum to store a decent amount of history and/or reduce wear on the SSD.

Different cars and maybe different file compressions, but 128GB is what comes standard with every Tesla. Never had an issue. Lasts awhile.

If anyone lives in Florida, the Back-to-School sales tax holiday starts today for 30 days and includes tax-free computer accessories, such as hard drives. Makes that premium for that Samsung Shield a tiny bit easier to handle.

New drive came in last night. Samsung T7 non shield. Had issues again as it would not format the SSD. Took about 10 times trying to format before it worked. But it would not save a clip. If you clicked the save clip it starts and ends the clip immediately.

Gave up for the night since we had family over. Tried again after getting to work and same issue. Did a soft reset and that seemed to allow me to save clips and videos popped up again. I did notice also that the motion cam hadn't been recording while at work for one day.

Hopefully all is fixed now. Did send feedback to Rivian.

You can find decent deals on Ebay if you’re patient enough, I snagged a 1TB Shield T7 today for just over $200 with the $10 off coupon for ordering through the Ebay mobile app.

It’s not the best pricing compared to 6 months ago, but who knows what the future holds for SSDs.

If anyone is interested, this Lexar Jumpdrive works well in the R2 and fits in the location without any need for a cable.

You said Sandisk but linked to a Lexar, did you paste the correct link?

Thanks for catching that.

I think the key here will be 'longevity'. Lots of jumpdrives should work just fine if they meet the minimal Rivian specs, but the real question is how long will they last when having to deal with multiple read/write accesses across its memory, overall degradation, etc. Most jumpdrives aren't designed for continuous use - they're designed to read/write some files to them now and then, and unplug it.

If such a jumpdrive works but ends up failing after 6-12 months of continuous use and has to be replaced, then are we really saving money in the long run?

In my mind an SSD, while more expensive up front, is technically designed with higher read/write cycle tolerances. So spending $200 for an external SSD and having to replace it every 4-5 years makes more sense in my mind than spending $90 on a jumpdrive that will need to be replaced 2, maybe 3 times over the same time period.

That being said, jumpdrives are so much more compact, and they don't rattle around like an external SSD can. Additionally, it might make sense to get a jumpdrive now, and wait out the current price spike of SSDs, hoping that when the jumpdrive eventually fails, SSD prices will have gone down a bit. That's probably what I'll end up doing when I finally get my R2.

I think it comes down to what kind of storage is in the drive. Lots of jumpdrives are just fancy enclosures around an SD card, but others are actual NAND chips. If there is a big price difference for the same capacity, and the enclosures are not wildly different (eg injection molded plastic vs machined aluminum), I'd be weary of the cheaper one.

I agree reliability is important.

I’m not concerned about longevity. I have a similar 256GB Sandisk in my R1S that has been super reliable now for over 3 years.

Because a new car that touts its technology should not require a clip on remote. My 2005 Infiniti has a still working homelink button on the rearview mirror. And not to mention someone could break into your car and steal your remote. Then simply follow you home to figure out where you live.
It seems absolutely nuts any vehicle manufactured today has an opener that doesn’t work correctly. This is an automobile, not a PC waiting for windows updates. clearly they were not ready to launch this vehicle.

Relax, the opener is in 2026.24.40, works great just like the R1 opener. The opener was in all vehicles delivered after 7/14.

As a stock holder, I have no issues shipping a vehicle with some minor features planned for future OTAs. Way better than missing an expected start of delivery date for a critical product line.

Had an issue earlier this week where the R2 was showing "Unknown System Version". Was showing the correct version in the app though. Tried a soft reset and that didn't work. So just drove to work today and on the way home it prompted me to update to the new version. First big update for me since this is my first Rivian. It fixed the "Unknown System Version bug after I updated so that was nice. It didn't take the 40 minutes was about 15 to 20 minutes it seemed. Didn't show that it was updating on the phone or the display just had to wait for it to show in the app that it had updated.

Gear guard is nice. Ordered the Sandisk Extreme Pro 1 TB for it which will be here on Friday. Garage paired up nicely and works every time as opposed to the our Cadillac Lyriq which doesn't always work.

Do need to figure out a way to secure the ssd in the glovebox without trying to mess up the felt like material.
I haven't looked at connecting an SSD yet, would something like this fit and connect conveniently?
