I understand why someone might think this and make such an adorable comment. In reality however, our Model Y:

1) Saved my wife's life in a horrific driver-side side-impact collision that EMTs told us would have resulted in grave injury or worse in most vehicles
2) Provided video of said contested collision, saving us untold insurance trouble and money
3) Due to our cheap electricity and free supercharging miles, has cost us ~$500 to travel 10,000 miles.
4) Has required zero maintenance
5) Has class-leading storage space that frankly makes the need for a truck questionable
6) Continues to accumulate useful new features
7) Can smoke most vehicles from a dig and is not completely soul less to drive, despite being a 100 mpg mom-mobile
8) Has access to the supercharger network that has thus far been indispensable to our personal travel habits.

There is more to a modern vehicle than panel gaps and paint quality.
A lot of these benefits would come from any EV. So I am glad you are looking for one with better build quality, better interior materials quality, more customization and a better company ethic.

Does anyone track the prices increases from Tesla over time? How much have their prices increased since Jan 2021 for example?

Yeah that's not inflation. That's simply price gouging by the OEM instead of the dealer.
Death by a thousand cuts from Tesla - Rivian just decided to do it all at once...

Also known as supply and demand. They have a massive backlog of orders locked in at pre-inflation prices and current supply shortages.

So do dealerships. They have the same excuse for justifying markups.

As is their prerogative, though "gouging" doesn't come into play when there's hard cost difference. If the manufacturer is paying more to produce the car you aren't being gouged.

Tesla has raised prices on its only real competing model (X) by 48% since Rivian started taking pre-orders. I put together a spreadsheet in 2019 to compare costs with the R1S, when the base model X was 84k. Now it's 120k (not 114k, which includes gas savings). I'm in the camp of those who would be priced out by Rivian too, had RJ not decided to honor my 2019 pre-ordered pricing. I also believe the only way EVs will be affordable is if we have more competition. I'm no fanatic, but even if I can't afford one, I'm rooting for Rivian.

You can get it for 115k if you go to the 19” wheels 5 seater and standard paint.

Thank you to Rivian raising the prices when they did as I ordered a Model Y the next day before any of the price increases for Tesla in 2022. Not only am I getting my LR Model Y for 58990, but will be getting my reinstated Rivian R1S Quad Motor Large Pack for 74,000.
@Texasrivian ditto, I ordered my MY on the same day the Rivian price went up. Now I have a car for 2 years before I get my R1S. With the way prices are going up, am sure I can trade the MY in for the same price I bought it for .. :)

Haha, still 35k more than my LE order. But I guess the option to downgrade makes up for the gas savings ruse - is that based on 3 or 5 dollars per gallon? I guess Rivian offering the option to downgrade is par for the course.

I agree and I think the R1S is way more usable. That is why I had no plans on canceling when Rivian announced the price increase. I was disappointed in how it was done but I think the value is still there at the higher prices.

Even with the increased R1S prices, it's still a much better deal than the Model X.

Base R1S with dual motors and the larger battery pack is $78,500

Base Model X with 7 seats is $118,500.

That's a $40,000 premium or $47,500 with the tax credit.

Both have similar acceleration and range. The R1S has more storage, off-road capability, towing, and roof rack compatible. The Tesla charges faster (for the moment) and has a better charging network (for the moment). I don't understand why someone would pay the Tesla premium in this situation.
