This only impacts the unfortunate post hike folks. Will Rivian really build the dual motor option or is it something that is just vaporware to avoid more price hike backlash? I know they said 2024, but somehow I don’t see it coming. Anyone else feels the same way?

Yes. It brings motor design and production in house. They will also have a new quad motor variant per the shareholder meeting. This also enables them to go to an 800v architecture.

They have it designed, it'll go in the EDV first, and then the trucks. The primary holdup is getting the line built.

Yes, they absolutely will! And it will, over time, out-sell the quad motor by a wide margin. It should be awesome. It will be my next-next truck. ?

Honestly, I'd love to have the option to choose the dual motor instead of quad motor for my pre- March 1st Explore trim R1S reservation without changing the price.

Agree. Although the quad motor is super cool and impressive, honestly, I REALLY don’t need it. But more range would be nice. This may be silly - but I recently put in an another reservation for a dual motor/ max pack R1T.

This is new to me. Are you saying that will be in production simultaneously with current quad? Or will replace it? If it replaces it, I can see some of the current reservations including mine delivered in 2024 to be potential for replacement. Makes me wonder which one it will be. I trust the current motors a bit more than in-house built but want the 800V.

As you mentioned, I would pick the dual motor at reduced price if I had the option. After the first few weeks of doing 0-60s I would be hypermiling for most of it’s life. The additional power would be a waste for me. Range and charging speed would make much bigger difference. I wonder what towing capacity is for dual motor.

From the q4 shareholder letter.

We will also continue significant investments in our next-generation vehicle platforms and in-vehicle technologies, including our
proprietary 800-volt architecture which includes a new in-house family of drive
units for both Dual and Quad-Motor configurations. This 800-volt architecture
also includes an integrated on-board charger, DC to DC converter, and DC to AC
converter, where the power stages of the DC-AC and AC-DC are bi-directional and
share semiconductors, magnetics, and the controller. We are also developing a
heat pump-based thermal system for improved cold weather efficiency as well as
a range of new battery packs including both high nickel and lithium iron phosphate
(“LFP”) chemistries.

This almost makes me feel better about having to wait.

Yeah, I would totally delay my R1S explore reservation for an 800v dual motor variant at the same price. I just don't have use for the quad motor for what we would use the R1S for.

I wouldn’t mind the DC to DC capability and a bit healthier AC output either. Looking forward to see more details on that.

About 1.5 year away at this point. My R1s explore is (supposedly) 1H 2023. I'd gladly push it to 2024 for it.
