R1S Alternatives: 3 row electric, hybrid or plugin hybrid?

im thinking about looking at alternatives to the R1S. maybe i'll wait for the R2 or the R1 dual motor. anyone have recommendations for a 3 row electric, hybrid or plugin hybrid SUV? im not looking to do any serious off-roading. camping, overlanding and maybe some light trails.

a few that i could think of:

• Toyota Highlander Hybrid
• Toyota Sequoia Hybrid
• Tesla Model Y
• Tesla Model X
• Kia EV9
• Kia Sorento Hybrid
• Volkswagon ID6
• Lucid Gravity

Volvo XC90 PHEV is worth looking at. We’ve got two through their subscription program while we wait for our R1T and R1S to show up.

There really aren’t any competitors out right now and not too many in the near future either.

If I couldn’t wait for an R1S I’d seriously look at the Volvo XC90 PHEV (2022 extended range version). I spec’d one for a little over $70k which isn’t bad at all. Same powertrain as the XC60 in this C&D review. The Mercedes EQB will be out this year and have 3 rows but it’s model y sized.

Kia EV9 is the best comparable in the future.

There’s the Vinfast VF9 allegedly coming out later this year but it has the weird battery subscription and much worse specs from a new carmaker.

For two rows, the Grand Cherokee 4xe could be decent.

We had a Volvo XC90 PHEV. This biggest drawback is the hybrid system. When in all electric mode it’s incredibly slow and you only get about 10-15 miles of range. Unless short drives on side roads are 75% of your driving, I would just get the regular XC90 and save your money.

The Model X third row is decent but now a 6/7 seater is over $120k which is ridiculous.

There are few good alternatives and like someone else mentioned, most on your list are several years out.

Check out the C&D article above (xc60 review but same powertrain) for changes. The real world highway range went up to 30 miles from only 13 for the previous version.

It’s no Rivian but might be adequate for around town.

The reason I am not sleeping on the EQB is because it’s shaped like a box, not an egg. I think it’ll have good storage. I was able to reserve one for $1,000 and it’ll be at the dealer in a couple months.

IIRC the starting price for the EQB is surprisingly low too, although it seems pretty anemic and has short range. Not bad for a grocery getter/kid hauler though

Not 3 rows but I've read a lot of great things about the Kia EV6.

I did not fit in the EV6 comfortably. I’m 6’2” and hit my head on the roof even in the version without the sunroof and the seat all the way down. I do like sitting upright but it has far less head room for me in the drivers seat than my model 3. I was not impressed with the trunk space either and no frunk. They being said others like it a lot. Just not for me. We are looking at the EQB too for an around town vehicle to consider. Could probably flip it and breakeven or make some money when the R1S is available.

We’ve got one of each, both 2022MY: one with the old powertrain, one with the new extended range setup. The new battery and electric motor completely changes things. Way snappier in EV mode and I’m consistently getting 35 miles to a charge. I got 1300 miles on my last tank of gas.

Can you share more on the Care program, please. I'm thinking about that.

I can’t really add much to what’s on the FAQ on the website. It’s not the greatest deal, but it’s flexible and convenient.
