Now that the R1S are being delivered, wondering if they have factory installed shades for children riding in the second row. If not, posting this thread as an ask to RJ and the design team as (I’m sure) most buyers have their families in mind with this purchase. Thanks.

These and the lack of more cup holders are my wife’s top complaints about the R1S. Hopeful the aftermarket comes up with good solutions for both!

I’ve used aftermarket for my current cars but they don’t do a good job of covering the entire window. The factory installed ones (like BMW and Mercedes) are great and cover the entire window. Happy to pay extra for it, but prefer it being factory installed and fitted to the windows.

Those factory shades require integration with the interior door panel. Given how late in the day and behind schedule Rivian is producing R1S, there are almost NO chance of this coming through - perhaps R1S02 or R2 series.

A better hope is the aftermarket accessory makers...

I hate to complain, because I'm super excited to get my R1S, but this is a huge oversight imo. Every SUV I've ever owned (Honda Pilots, LR4, VW Atlas, Volvo XC90) has 2nd row sun shades. An SUV is a family car; this feature should be standard.

So typically rear windows are dyed darker, but have no actual UV protection. Wouldn’t getting windows tinted to any degree solve this issue, as I figure the whole point with an infant in the backseat for example is to prevent exposure to harmful UV when in a car seat. Additionally the ceramic tints reduce heat coming through the window considerably. I’d argue comparable to the shades. Seems like an easy post purchase upgrade that most people seem to do anyway with electric cars for AC efficiency.

I wish rear shades and a moonroof cover were mandatory on all cars, honestly.

But the chance of Rivian adding it is almost zero. It adds complexity to the doors and they're already struggling to get the seals right as we've seen from wind noise complaints.

Well it is heavily tinted already. Just buy after market ones if you really want more.
