The only time the sound would be needed is when backing up. If you use situational awareness, you can mitigate this risk. In general, it’s pretty annoying and pollutes the environment with sound. The Toyota and Nissan ones are incredibly loud and annoying.
It’s actually for sight impaired pedestrians who otherwise would not know a vehicle is approaching.

The only sounds I don’t like are the clunks from the suspension…

I never hear the PWS after the update that lowered the volume.
I like the alarm chirp.
I like the unique blinker sound and the volume hasn’t been an issue.

No, I like all of them. Especially the clicks and the clunks it makes to notify pedestrians that it's actually starting to move.

I would love to be able to change the turn signal sound and change the volume. It would be less of an issue if it had a more traditional stalk that would let you feel the position to know if it was on. The turn signal stalk was one of my least favorite things on my Model 3 too. Especially if you used your turn signal to change lanes in heavy traffic (especially at night, in rain or snow), you don't want to have to divert your eyes from the road to see flashing on the screen if you can't hear it or feel the position.

Our other car is from before the PWS became law. It’s absolutely silent. Our neighborhood is semi-rural and there are no sidewalks. Several times I’ve found myself driving up behind people that were out walking completely unannounced. I don’t want to use the horn on my neighbors. Once or twice I found myself opening the window and turning the radio up so people can hear that the car is there!

I would not turn the PWS off. The reason it seems obnoxious on some vehicles is because it’s designed NOT to blend into the background noise of a neighborhood or city.

People who don’t mind the pedestrian warning sound probably have never been in their house garage when someone else drives off. We used to have an Infiniti QX80 and that sounded like a huge machine starting up when turned on. The Rivian is better, but not by much. Tesla managed to find a sound that isn’t objectionable. If I feel inspired I’ll make a video doing some comparisons…

And I’m glad to hear that there are people here that can hear the turn signal sounds. Us old farts don’t have as good hearing and it sucks.

I guess there’s no way to turn off the door lock sound? I just realized I could turn off auto lock at home, so at least I won’t hear it in my garage, which fixes most of my problem with that.

I read that Rivian designed the engaged turn signal to mimic a rain drop.

Nah, I've heard the sound plenty of times. I don't find it objectionable. I think it works well for it's purpose. It's not just a sound you can ignore or misattribute.

Right, because everyone can hear a single drop of rain ;)

At any rate, a choice of sounds would be appreciated and/or a loudness volume for the turn signal and other inside warnings.

Retired from construction.
I'm fine with the sounds. They are muted and not too obnoxious. The lock sound is actually the sound of a Barn swallow. I have never noticed the pedestrian warning sound. I''ll have to have my wife drive by me and listen for it while I'm outside the truck. I did like the owl and can envision having a selection of sounds in the future. I would also like to have a choice of colors for the interior lighting.

I love the bird chirp.

I like the idea of the turn signal, although if I have no music playing I can hear STATIC when the turn signal plays. I would like Rivian to fix that. I've checked other R1Ts and they all do it, so it's a design issue. Hopefully it's just a bad audio sample, but I don't know.

A past OTA made the PWS more quiet and now it doesn't bother me. I do agree that other manufacturers have found more pleasant PWS sounds... But it's not a huge issue, for me.

I'm basically deaf and I don't have any problems hearing the turn signals. If anything I think it's too loud when you're stopped, and I only have issues hearing it at speed if I have the stereo up, and at speed I don't really care if I can hear it or not.

Low speed sounds I think are fine, no worse than any Tesla sound.

Locking sound is fantastic. I don't have any confusion over which sound is which when the door handles retract, they don't even really make that much noise. It doesn't sound like a screech, it very clearly sounds like a chirping bird.

I guess I disagree with you across the board ?

Whether it's supposed to be raindrops or two sticks, the only thing the turn signal sound makes me think of is this:
