I'm set to pickup my new R1S in Normal in the next week or so (I've been waiting 4+ years).

With winter weather and NEVER owning / driving an EV, I'm apprehensive about driving it from Normal back home here in Washington state. The alternative would be to have it transported.

So, knowing my complete 0% experience with EV's, what would you do? I could fly out with my son and take turns driving (we need to be back within 4 days), or spend $2k+ having a covered transport bring it back for us.

What would the community recommend? And depending what you say, any tips / suggestions on how to be effective?

Thanks in advance!

Make the drive and see if you can get a tour of the factory.

New to EV's... I would transport. Charging is going to add a lot of time and headaches, esp for a new EV owner.

It's an adventure vehicle. Make it your first adventure - jump in head first! When I get notified, I will definitely do Normal pickup if it works for my personal schedule.

I would drive it, actually have told CS if there is a way to put a note in my account the preference is a factory pickup.

Nonsense. I picked mine up in Normal having only ever test drove a Model Y for like 30 minutes. Charging was a complete non-issue. I just used ABRP and made sure I was stopping at a charger that if I had an issue, I could make it to the next on the route.

Yes it did add time, about 1 hour a day above what I would have spent in an ICE vehicle. Not nearly enough for it to be a major consideration.

Here is my trip report driving back to Portland. The only thing that would give me pause would be the weather. But if you can get a clear 4 days, absolutely go for it 100%

Why are you being charged for transport? I thought delivery was included. I would normally say drive but its winter so its no for me. You could always do a road trip when the weathers better. All the best!

I'd be more worried about the weather (coupled with the deadline) than charging. Though of course you'll want to do some planning on where to charge ahead of time!

Everyone switching to an EV has to make a first trip sometime. Might as well be now. My first trip was in 2010; I went 3,500 miles from Seattle to San Diego and back. I had to use campgrounds, as there weren't any chargers back then. THAT, I would not necessarily recommend. But my 30k of EV road trips on DCFC since then have all been very enjoyable.
