To me, these CarPlay discussions have become like a bad car wreck - I want to drive by and ignore, but dammit I can't help but look.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion, so here's mine - short and sweet, hopefully:
Reality - I think Rivian has been pretty clear for yearrs about CP not happening, and why, and it's extremely clear now. Face reality, peeps - buy a Rivian and live with it, or move along to to another brand.
Better UX - I think it's clear that they honestly do want to provide a better UX throughout, end to end. You can't get that with CP. Does CP include drive modes, suspension changes, climate control, etc. etc.? No. So no matter what you argue, CP is and will be a different UI/UX than the rest of the Rivian UI/UX experience. I've been doing Apple since the Apple II. I have done some Mac and IOS development since the Mac Plus came out. Apple has a great UI/UX because they locked it down from day one and enforced it along with documented HIG (Human Interface Guidelines). BUT in IOS, they relaxed some of it, and IOS apps are not that consistent in UX like the old days. I don't want that in the Rivian, I'll take a full end to end product even if it takes a while.
CP UX - I'll argue that the CP UX is not that great. I've used it over the years in dozens of rental cars, and I have it on a Sony retrofit radio in my BMW 330cic. More times than not, I have had freezes, lockups, and other inexplicable crap. The most recent was a 2023 Suburban rental. It was still unreliable and did something goofy every day of the rental.
