I think the range extender is smart, especially in a pickup. I'm honestly surprised you don't see more of that after the i3. It probably doesn't need to be a full V-6 engine, but conceptually I think it makes a lot of sense for those who aren't 100% on board with electric

The typical truck buyer is very conservative when it comes to styling. There are a number of truck owners who are interested in PHEV/BEV drivetrains, but prefer traditional styling and/or are incredibly loyal to a particular brand. These people are not even considering something like the Rivian or CT.

Jeep's 4xe drivetrain has been incredibly popular even though those models cost significantly more than 'substitutable' trims.
I agree about the looks of a truck. I’m saying that buyers won’t pay the $10-20k premium. They’ll just buy the cheaper ICE version.

Strongly disagree.

There is a large number of people willing to go EV or PHEV/EREV but want same traditional styling and traditional interiors offered by the legacy OEMs.

People that want all new will simply go with an all new pure BEV automaker.

IMO the ~8k Ford Lightnings sitting on dealer lots right now are sitting there because on paper they kinda suck vs Silverado EV and RAM REV.
I’m not referring to the traditional v new aesthetics.

I’m saying the buyers won’t pay $10-20K more for a BEV or a different hybrid (in this case) car. They’ll just buy the ICE version.

I’m a big fan of BEVs, but not everyone is ready for that move yet. We had a 2nd gen Volt for 6 years and I believe it only saw a gas station 3 times. So it can still make a huge impact. Some folks need a gateway drug.

I'm sorry, am I the only one who thinks this is dumb?
There is a clear demand for PHEV/REEV trucks judging from what I've seen on F150 and Maverick forums. They make a lot of sense for those who have legitimate long-range towing needs.

I guess as a stop gap this may work, the charging networks are changing so dramatically in the next 5 years, vehicles like this won't be necessary.

The 4xe is a >$10,000 premium on some trims and they still sell.

What do you mean by gimped the tank?
Like the gas tank in the i3 hybrid only being 100 miles of range. The Ramcharger has a full size tank (27 gallons)

Doesn’t transfer to the F150 lightning v F150 ICE comparison, which is more relevant IMO.

Wrangler serves a bit different customer segment, eg Bronco, off-roading, lifestyle

I think this is going to be a great gateway drug too, because of the EV only powertrain. The people that use these and actually plug them in every day are going to realize that they don't use gas very often. And that having to stop to fill up when they do, sucks.

How is that more relevant than comparing the Ram REEV to the Ram ICE?

4xe is also available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and will soon be available on the Wagoneer (edit: also on the Gladiator pickup). Not to mention that a similar drivetrain is available on the Pacifica....

Pick-up truck market v SUV passenger market.

I wouldn’t say the R1T market is the same as the R1S market. The latter probably has a higher propensity to consume EVs

The pickup truck market is sensitive to range because of towing. They're also sensitive to the current reality that having to charge while towing can be a huge pain in the ass, since the vast majority of charging stations don't support charging while having a trailer attached. There's definitely an untapped market here and right now, RAM is the only one with an entry in it.

The trucks like the Ramcharger are a great transition for the sceptical. They will buy them realize that they never fill up and the gas engine is just extra junk they are dragging around and don't need 90% of the time. Then the next vehicle they buy will probably be full electric. I've already seen people doing that with the 4XE.
