In my local RAN I have seen Tesla's along with other brands charging already. Is your comment only related to the DCFC stalls?
RAN (Rivian Adventure Network) are all level 3 fast chargers and for now Rivian only.
Rivian Waypoints are all level 2 and open to all EV's.

Indeed. And Waypoints are free. I don't this is likely to change, as I don't think the hardware has any ability to handle payments.

And of course as of today, RAN is no longer free. Though at $0.36/kWh, it is the same as EA with a $7/month Pass+ membership, so a fairly reasonable price.

Not true. Some Waypoint chargers are not free. It depends on who partnered with Rivian on the install. For example, the Waypoint charger in Prineville, OR is not free. The cost per kw is only $0.01 but there's also a $10.00 connection fee.

Well, I stand corrected. I checked out Prineville in the app. The other two nearby are free. What is the point of charging $0.01/kWh? Not even worth the payment processing fee. I see that the $10 fee is for idling longer than the 10-minute grace period. And you can use the spot without charging, but then it is $0.01/min. Very odd one.

The $10 fee is per connnection. I found out the hard way when I was heading home from camping in the Ochocos and decided to try it out! Added 1kwh in 5 minutes. Charge was $10.01!

On Tesla's website it says you can get any Model 3,Y or S delivered by the end of the year.

Model X you may have to wait till February.
Dozens of Model X vehicles are available for immediate delivery in the DC area. Source: Tesla website

Tesla Model 3
... The R1S and Model X are not direct 1:1 competitors. People will buy an R1S who would not even consider a Tesla. ...
Given how few 7 seater EVs are in the market at the moment, this is absolutely not true. I agree they are unique in their capabilities, but if moving 7 people and having luggage capability is your requirement while shopping electric, you most certainly cross shop these two.

When I test drove a Model Y last week, they said I could have it in a week.

When my boss bought his Model Y 2 weeks ago, it was delivered 5 days later.

From a functionality standpoint, I would have considered Model X. 7-seater, check. EV, check. But Model X wasn't in the running when I finalized my R1S purchase in February 2023 for multiple reasons:
  • I had pre-March pricing of $75K, and at the time Model X non-Plaid was closer to $100K (Tesla only dropped the price recently to *exactly* match the R1S $84K)
  • I am morally opposed to funding anything Musk-related (purely subjective and personal)
  • I have a friend who works at JD Power, and others who owned Tesla, and the quality issues for such a mature company put me off (not that a start-up company like Rivian has turned out any better, but at least they have the excuse of just starting out)
I also have a reservation on a Kia EV9, and may consider trading in my R1S. 7-seater, check. EV, check. Again, a very different vehicle to the R1S and X, but it also has Android Auto, which for me would be a huge plus.

The good news is that there are more options in this 7-seat/EV segment, with more coming shortly (IONIQ 7, GV90 and others).
