Yesterday morning we had our first major issue with our R1S in 3 months. Essentially the infotainment system booted up screwy to where inputs from the rest of the vehicle wouldn’t register. That included most importantly the hood and liftgate (it wasn’t sure if they were closed or open) because we were in turtle mode, only able drive home from church at 13mi/hr.
Normally a reset ought to work for this right? Except the car wouldn’t accept the command for a hard reset. The buttons on the steering wheel would allow for a soft reset only. And no other inputs. (Garage opening, music volume, nothing!)
So it looked like we’d have to have it towed from OKC where we live to the Dallas service center 3hrs away the next day. Then my wife told me she got a notification from the Rivian app about the new software update. She asked if that would patch the issue and in my best impression of Ebenezer Scrooge I scoffed “Humbug!” , until I realized it would achieve the hard reset we wanted, after completing the update.
I used the iOS app to initiate the update and 2hrs later, the hard reset had worked. Everything was back to normal!
It was truly a Christmas Miracle. I think the bottom line is there should be some way to force a hard reset using the app.
