I'm just a couple of months away from the date I'm hoping to take delivery of a sparkling new R1S and am trying to see if there are perceptible (subjective yes) differences for...
* Noise/vibration/harshness
* Perceived acceleration
... in various modes between the performance-dual and quad motor configs.

I'm in the pre-price-hike camp so the cost difference is negligible ($500) compared to the cost of the vehicle. The only reason for me to go with the perf-dual is the max pack (+$6500). Despite the minimal perceived range improvement (let's not debate that dead horse here) since one of the routes I expect to travel on a few times a year is ~350 miles and this will enable charging en-route to be optional.

In any event, this question is more about the differences other than the battery pack :)

I'm curious about this too, particularly acceleration. I've heard a few minor comments now in the forum and on Out of Spec mentioning a slight lag when accelerating with the dual performance motor - I think in All Purpose when the rear motor is reengaging. It seems pretty minor, but wondering if it is something that would bother me.

Do you have access to a quad to drive? If so, put it in all purpose mode and compare it to sport mode. Quad all purpose is around ~700hp, compared to the PDM 665hp. Quad sport is 835hp.

Also the warranty on quad with large is the longest Rivian offers.

I wonder if this is because the rear is disengaged during low acceleration scenarios and if you suddenly accelerate it will either take a few milliseconds for it to reengage or wait to make sure you're accelerating for long enough before reengaging?

Based on things I've heard from Rivian engineers, the ride height has a lot to do with amount of available power. I believe the full 835 horsepower is only available in sport mode at the lowest ride height setting.

Nobody knows for sure exactly how the drive motors are programmed and the owner's guide is very vague as to what each of the drive modes do. But you'll notice in all purpose the lowest ride height setting is not available. In sport mode the lowest ride height setting is available and the ride feel defaults to stiff. So I think the ride feel has something to do with it as well. If you have it in soft, the system will probably not allow you to have as much power.

A lot of this is speculation because Rivian will not reveal exactly how the drive modes are programmed. They only say things like full-time all-wheel drive, etc. But that makes little sense because for the quad motor, it's in all-wheel drive all the time unless you put it in conserve which decouples the rear drive units.

I’ve drive the quad. I own the performance duel. Let me put this issue to rest. The performance duel is blistering fast. The 0-60 difference to me is unnoticeable. I chose the performance duel over the quad for better battery range, which has proven to my benefit. I have driven my R1S performance duel in both deep sand and snow. No issues. The truck is a tank. Yes- the quad will work optimally in these conditions but on a relative scale for a normal driver probably not very noticeable. I have nothing but positive feedback in all categories on the performance duel.

Did not know this! Do they mention it anywhere?
I got the max pack R1S and it's "whip my head back" fast in All Purpose mode. I'm 420 miles in and super pleased. Hopefully this helps.

I've also heard that the 0-60 time is more attainable for the dual than the quad (for their respective times of 3s and 3.5s) but yes I agree it is probably really hard to measure the difference at those accelerations.

It's not noticle to a normal person. I think unless you were a professional racecar driver, the difference in acceleration between 3.0 to 3.5s is just silly. Both of these configerations, duel performace or quad are just stupidly fast feeling.

I dunno about that, I got 3.03 seconds (measured with Dragy so very accurate) in my quad R1T on stock 21s with only 87% battery and losing traction. It 100% could get under 3 seconds if I was on a stickier road, but this was on a country backroad that isn’t in the best shape. All purpose is significantly slower once you get used to the power, but still ridiculously fast considering the size and weight of the vehicle.

I'm just stating what Rivian posts as their factory specs from their website.

I hadn't heard that. Where is it listed that all purpose is about 700 hp.
