Door won't latch closed…bounces open.

Left my truck parked at the Denver airport last week. When I got back it was 10°F and covered in snow and ice. Unlocked the truck, wife and kids and I opened all doors and got in. Wife got back out (front passenger side) to wipe snow off the windshield and when she got back in, the door wouldn't latch closed. I thought maybe some snow or ice was built up somewhere and told her to pull it closed hard. She tried, and each time it bounced back open. Looked inside the latch on the door, could not see any ice or snow at all.

Since the truck wouldn't let us drive home with the door "open", I tried something else: I had my wife hold the door ~closed and then I manually locked the doors. Now it stayed physically closed, but the sensor showed it as open. Wife could pull it and it would move half an inch and the sensor would show it closed, but when she released it would move back out half an inch and the sensor showed it open.

I unlocked the doors…and now the door was still stuck locked. The handle on the inside could not get it to open. Son went out and tried pulling on the oustside handle to no avail. And still the sensor showed it open.

Called mobile service, and they had me reboot the car. Changed nothing. While the service person was "uhmm"ing, my son went out and pushed hard on the door to close it and it clicked. Door has worked fine since then.

I'm having this issue now, but the driver's door. Needed to use the car several times yesterday and out of all the times, the door only opened once from the outside... still not at all from the inside.

Once I got it open from the outside, in order to close it on the inside I had to pull pretty hard and click the lock button/icon on the screen. I'm sure I could have used the fob for that, but the point is you have to lock it in order for it to stay closed. Otherwise it closes halfway and shows as open on the screen (because it is).

Let me know if you found a fix for this. There may be a relationship to the issue and cold weather.

I got this fixed by Service replacing some/all of the door mechanism.

When I took it in the first time they looked at it, tried "lubricating" some parts, and the problem reoccurred repeatedly.

When I took it in the second time, they were very surprised by my description. They had all sorts of wrong guesses about how it might be behaving (e.g. maybe the latch was locked and it was bouncing off?) and I had to clearly demonstrate that it was as though the door handle were held open: the latch simply fails to engage at all. (And then, after locking and driving, there's no way to get it to unlock/re-open without multiple reboots or extended time or something.)

I very clearly said that if they did not know what the cause was, they needed to replace the entire mechanism or even the door itself. Whatever they replaced, it has not happened over a few uses in the sub-zero temperatures.

I realize now that lots of experiences I had before getting it fixed were documented in the Rivian app, but not here. In short, my experience has been:

IF the weather outside is below 20°F, the passenger would open the door normally from the outside, and then attempting to close the door it would fail to latch at all. You could gently press it or slam it, and the door would close fully (flush with the exterior) but drift open again as it was not held closed by the latch. Visual inspection showed zero ice or debris in the exterior of the latch area. Once the door is reading open, the Rivian refuses to drive. So, you must hold the door closed fully and press the Lock to have it held mostly closed during the drive.

When I would arrive at my destination after performing this, the door would not unlock with the others. The exterior handle would open and present itself, but pulling on either the exterior or interior handle would not open the door. Cycling the locks closed and open would not fix it. Sometimes one or two full-vehicle reboots would fix the problem. Usually the passenger would just slide over and climb out the driver door, we'd go to our destination, and upon returning to the vehicle (after, say, dinner) the door would open from the outside without issue.

This is exactly my experience, but with the driver door. Thanks for this summary.

Same issue happened with me. All of a sudden front passeger door was not closing and just bouncing back. did soft reset but of no use. I called the Rivian customer care and he advised vehicle restart and that also did not help. Rivian support is so bizzare they advised to hold the door and drvie back home. They said you drive back home by holding the door and we will send mobile support. I drove back home with my wife holding the door and then customer care told me that it can not be fixed using mobile support and need to toe the vehicle from own pocket. Is it worth buying almost a 90k vehicle which doesn't have basci support and they are playing with the life. I am really pissed off. The service center is closed for next 2 days they can not do anything untill then. My R1s just 8 months old with these safety issues. I really doubt the safetly and quality of the R1s.
Are they any other legal option apart from seeling it which I will loose in a big way.

If the vehicle is undriveable, they pay for the tow. You only pay if it either isn't covered under warranty, or if the vehicle is drivable but you choose to have it towed. In this case, it's very clearly unsafe to drive. They pay the tow bill.
