hi all,
I'm looking for chains that properly fit the 21" Pirelli (275/55/R21). I chatted with Rivian support - they cannot refer me to any. Anyone find some chains that fit? Please humor me on this... I looked into the other options (socks, add'l wheels, no chains). Just looking to find some chains that fit (less than 16mm).

thanks!

I believe the manual says not to use chains. I got autosocks for my R1T that has 21".

Never used them yet though.
Correct. No chains on 21" Road Wheels per manual. Using chains will void warranty on any damage created by said chains. I ordered up 2 sets of these (snow driving only, no asphalt):

Snow cables are recommended for 21 and 22 OE wheel and tires … according to the owners manual … I’ve never used snow socks so I can’t comment. In an emergency snow cables have worked well on my ICE vehicles.

My experience with the 21" OEM Pirelli (275/55/R21) AS tires in snow was 100% amazing. I was traveling at 5MPH, but at 4,000 to 6,000 ft. elevation in a white out blizzard. Zero slip/slide /spin. I do not think there was any ice slabs, it was new snow, but there were 0ver 25 Semi tractor trailers on their sides slipped and blown over and I passed them all without any issues.
I may buy a pair of something for the front wheels someday, if anyone answers the question in this thread, but I may have more money than need.

This is what I was planning to buy. Had these for my CX-5 and they worked well.

I have a set of ZT751 cables that I use on our gx470 with 265/70/17 (32") Michelin ATs. I figured I'd test fit them on the stock Rivian 275/50/22 and they just barely fit if you are skilled. No tools used.

Step 1: Hose some of the mud off from last time, give up on that and drape them all the way over into the wheel well with the single opening at the bottom inside the well.

2: Make sure the hook plates have the hooks facing out with the flat against the tire.

3: Now hook the backside link together.

4: Pull the cables back out towards the front of the wheel and slide/wiggle the sections toward the two outside link sections. This is the toughest part and requires a little patience if you are not practiced in cables. Connect the upper short link section and then the same for the remaining adjustable one. Install the bungy by grabbing both the rubber and metal loops with both hands, squeezing and clipping it off with the flat sections in.

I prefer this type of cable because they go diagonally across the tire providing a more continuous gripping area than perpendicular types.

The ZT751 size just barely fits 33" tall and 275 section width of the 22s. You can see they are on the last link and I was doubtful they would go but a little wiggling did it. They should fit the 21s as well but the 34" tires on the 20s will be to big and need a bigger size (ZT837?)

One more pic of them in use but not on the Rivian. At 2.5' of snow on our half mile steep mountain driveway, they become insufficient. After that real "chains" are needed.

Please read the manual. Chains on 21" VOID Warranty, if I read it correctly.

Ok well these are cables, but body clearance will be an issue with 34s

Our winter tires are Michelin X-Ice Snow 275/50R22, which is almost identical circumference to OEM Pirelli 275/55R21. My Costco Tire Center was able to make Spikes-Spiders (https://spikes-spider.com/) fit on the rear wheels in High ride height, which can be stable because I never go over 25 mph with chain-type traction devices anyway.

Costco wouldn't leave Spikes-Spiders on the front, because there wasn't enough clearance to avoid damage at the extremes of steering motion, and they figured nobody knows what steering motions will be required (or happen by themselves) on slick roads.

I'm still nervous about unpredictable front-to-back allocations of power, and especially unpredictable front-to-back allocations of regenerative braking, with our Quad Motor Gen 1 R1T in Snow Mode. I'm still not confident how either R1 would handle glare ice such as we had near the coast in January 2024.

Conversations with Rivian staff (none of whom could take responsibility if something went wrong) have me believing nothing really bad will happen as a direct result of chains or chain breakage. [Edit 2024-12-02: This applies only to the area next to the rear wheel well! I don't know if there's anything safety-sensitive next to the front wheel well!] I'm only reporting the current state of my winter preparations. I am NOT giving anyone else advice about what they should do.

Best wishes!
