Rivian 100% does NOT have what it takes to go at it alone. Full stop. However with partner investments (such as VW, Amazon and a highly subsidized tax payer loan), they have a legitimate chance. I believe in the product.
And it's important to note the joint venture is not with the VW brand, but the VW Group. #1, globally, in the industry by volume and size. The JV is for all brands under VW Group. Strange, but too many people think it's limited to just the VW brand.

Audi, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda, Scania, Bentley, Lamborghini, Cupra, MAN SE, Ducati, Scout and of course VW.

It's a huge win for Rivian.

You guys are sipping the cool aid too much. The auto industry is filled with history of JVs and brands being bought and sold off.

VWG is struggling today with sales down in just about every brand, especially at the high end. Tesla outsold Audi with just 5 models. Porsche sales are down over 20% and if you look at their EVs, Taycan lost 50%ish sales in 2024, and Macan EV sales so far, globally, is in the toilet.

We'll see if the JV bears fruit. The post/PRNews yesterday by Oliver Bloom had no new news. Just rehash of already known, including bulk parts /commonality to achieve economies of scale.

I hope Rivian makes it but there's a higher probability that it becomes a part of a major auto group (e.g., VWG).

The big difference from Audi or Porsche and Rivian is the software stack. The reason why Tesla and Rivian are better positioned is people want an EV that works like their computer. That’s why Tesla is successful and what I like about my Rivian. Legacy auto look like a horse and buggy when it comes to software.

Whoa! OP here. I never imagined this post would get so many responses. I'm most surprised at the amount of people that were offended and told me to go buy a Tesla. Let's remember, everyone here is pro Rivian and has invested and/or supported the company in one way or another.

To be clear, I don't think Rivian is going to shut it's doors one day and cease to exist. But is a bankruptcy possible? Absolutely.

I think a lot of responders just saw hate and missed the actual question so I will rephrase it to be more specific: Is Rivian, as a company, doing what it needs to do to survive?

Yes I brought up personal experience because that's the closest thing to seeing real operations beyond the press releases. I heard Rivian started running ads on Peacock/Youtube. That's an interesting move given that it's been so hard to have a local sales rep return my call after I had a test drive. I even drove to the Rivian Sales/Service Center hoping to connect with a sales rep. When I arrived they told me none of their sales reps work on Mondays lol.

But hey, maybe that's not how Rivian operates in other cities. They only have one location in Houston and this is a very big city, so it's a big miss to not want to sell cars on Mondays.

But I'm not solely basing doubts on personal experience. I stand by what I said about the number of options offered. Some of you thought I din't understand the options offered or thought I was saying they were too complex for customers. No, I brought the options up because it adds complexity to manufacturing and works against economies of scale. It also makes it more difficult to match customers to inventory vehicles when you are trying to move them.

I am heavily invested in Rivian stock and still moving forward with purchasing an R1S.

I believe in Rivian, but I don't look at them through rose colored lenses.

Walk into a biker bar and say, "IMO, motorcycles are bad"... what do you think would happen? Controversy gets people triggered. Plus, some of us are sick of randos coming in predicting doom, as if they are clairvoyant and know Rivian's business better than Rivian itself.

It's a community. If it was indeed a gang, you'd fare much worse and think twice about sharing your opinions, as uninformed as they are. And as a community, if you want to show up to community meetings and be that guy, don't be shocked by or indignant about responses you get.
