Purchasing Used 2023 with Only 140 miles - Bad Idea?

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase this 2023 R1S Quad Adventure. The vehicle only has 140 miles. It looks like the vehicle was prepped in 9/2023 and first titled 10/2023 as a lease vehicle.
At first I thought "Hey, it's basically a brand new car!".... but then I realized that not driving or maintaining the battery can't be good for it. (I have to assume that the car was unplugged during this period) So, is it valid to be concerned about purchasing an EV that has sat undriven for 18 months? Or does the car do a great job keeping the batteries at a safe charge state?

You should definitley check the battery health and soc in the RIDE menu. You can also check the soc of the 12 v battery. I would hope that any dealer would charge a BEV periodically while on the lot.
This is virtually my November 23 xxx build and I have been very happy with mine.

Thought high voltage health was no longer in ride, not was exactly helpful in what it actually proves?

I bought a used 23' Adventure Quad, large Battery. It was a couple months old in Jan. 23', It had 12K miles on it. It was $82K.
The Power cover has worked, the 12vdc batteries were warrantied at the factories request. The 21" OEM tires sucked. I love the truck, great vehicle.
If you need/want the R1T's features, I do, so this truck is a good fit for me.

I would not be too concerned with the HV system. The 12V may need replacement, but it would be under warranty, and mobile service could handle if needed. Tires may have started to dry rot or get flat spots if sitting for awhile. Personally, I would not be too concerned about any issues and would rather go for a used one like this versus a new one, but I am sure others have differing opinions.

Looks like someone ordered it. Shipping to. Georgia. I got a new 2023 R1T DMP in May 2024 during the great friends and family discounts of q2. No issues with that car and it was manufactured 3/23 delivered May 2024. It was at. Rivian Delivery Center for 15 months so not sure how they basically kept it for “maintained”

on a side note- I suspect it fell between the large couch cushions of the Rivian couch and was only found after a clean up =P

I did the same thing, bought a used 2023 R1S from CarMax for $73K. It only had 350mi, most of which were driven In Dec 2023. I bought it in Oct 2024 and it was totally fine, 100% like new. In the first few days I did get some sort of battery warning with something about it being locked in all wheel drive. I ignored it and was gone the next day and never saw it again. I’m guessing it had something to do with being idle for the better part of a year.

Weird situation, but I would jump on that if the price is right. If you are purchasing from Rivian, I would get them to reset your warranty start date from date you receive the vehicle... Otherwise it should be very low priced indeed.

FWIW, my R1T PDM sat out in a salvage yard for ~6 months with no care. Replaced the 12v. HV has been just fine.

Rivian will not reset a warranty on a used vehicle purchased through a third party seller. You’ll only get a fresh warranty on used vehicle purchased through Rivian’s own site.

Anecdotally, looking at the listing https://www.carmax.com/car/26612858

I see this car has the 20” AT wheels. Good chance it has the underbody shield as well, both of which are expensive options that normally would add over $5K to the price.

Mine has limestone paint, AT20 dark wheels, and the underbody shield and was still just $73K. Funny how the CarMax pricing algorithm totally overlooks options, using only year/mileage to calculate pricing.

Misunderstood that it was a purchase from Rivian. Go for the low price then because less warranty remaining.

Also be aware that this is Gen 1, so ADAS will be inferior to current models.
