Myth #6, buy a different vehicle. Some other manufacturers are shipping their vehicles without carplay compatibility too.
And there a considerable portion of the population who will choose not to buy a vehicle that doesn't offer CP/AA. Rivian will miss out on those buyers, unfortunately. That's tough for a new company struggling with sales numbers. It will get even tougher when the R2 comes out because there will be a whole new category of potential buyers.

I've got a buddy who loves my R1T and wants a Rivian but won't because he's a effing apple phone person who needs it on a $100k+ vehicle.

Phone people can't get over themselves.
I agree it's odd but what seems odd to us might be a trigger for some. I got rid of a perfect car mostly because there wasn't a way to turn the radio off at start. So, every time I got in the car, I had to turn it off. Some will think I'm crazy but it got old quickly for me.

Many, many people like that out there. There's simply no way around it.

🙄

We all spend a huge amount of our driving time interacting with the vehicle’s infotainment system, so how that system works and what it can do is understandably important to some people. I don’t get the dismissive and condescending attitude toward people for whom Android Auto or CarPlay is part of their buying decision.
I spend the most time interacting with the vehicle's input system. I'd be okay if my car didn't even have info"tainment".

and there are any number of people who had CarPlay in their last car. Thought “well Rivian is a tech company. So I’m sure they’ll do a passable job” and then regretted the loss. And will never buy another car without it.

If only there was a way Rivian could get more sales. . .

Yes, there are many people with standards and requirements, that should be obvious.

Yup, same with Tesla. Rivian is currently as shitty as Tesla was in 2020 or so. But again, my choice was to buy the best truck, which is hard to change, and simply add CP to it.

Appreciate the post! But yeah, I'm with most. I much prefer a good UI and no Apple Carplay than bad/mediocre UI with Carplay. As much people complain and moan about the lack of Carplay, sales data does not really show it really slowing down or increasing sales with its inclusion or not. I completely understand why Rivian isn't even entertaining this topic anymore.
I agree to a point, but CarPlay, while not as refined as the Rivian UI, has apps, lots and lots of them that work pretty much flawlessly. I've never seen Spotify or Apple Music on my phone unable to display any information (daily occurrence in Rivian), Google Maps hasn't routed me to the wrong address or been unable to search (Rivian maps is improved but still poor by comparison), and voice control that works.

IMO Rivian is holding back CarPlay and similar, partially because they want to control look and feel, partially it's arrogance and a belief that they know better than their customers, but mostly to sell subscription services. No need for Connect+ if CarPlay is out there.

I don't understand the love for CarPlay, as the amount of like people have for it is the amount I dislike it. That's not a dig against Apple, as I have a MacBook and an iPhone, but I still do not like CarPlay. It doesn't work that well, and it is a nanny by locking out the keyboard while the vehicle is in motion. Apparently, passengers do not exist.

I also feel like one of the few people on the planet who doesn't like voice control on devices. I don't want to talk to my tech, I want it to do as I ask by button press.

Is this whole thread some sort of response to this article whose source is the Financial Times (paywall so couldn't read) but the title is " Carmakers push back against Apple’s takeover of the dashboard "
https://insideevs.com/news/764017/apple-carplay-ultra-rollout-problems

" One unnamed executive at Renault put it very bluntly, per the report: “Don’t try to invade our own systems.” So far, that company, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Polestar and a few others have indicated they have no plans to offer a full-blown iOS expansion into their vehicles. While they aren't going as far as General Motors in cutting Apple CarPlay out entirely—the more basic, standard version of that system offers smartphone mirroring only in the main infotainment screen—they seem to be drawing a line at letting Apple take over all the car's functions.

this all regarding "ultra" it seems which Apple seems to pushing.

Given the number of times the subject comes up it’s clear the number is larger than zero.

Every company that says “well, customers keep buying our stuff. So obviously it doesn’t make that much of a difference” is looking at it wrong. And gets their comeuppance eventually.

FWIW I got the JD Power survey after I bought. And one from Rivian too. And I’m both I said that lack of CarPlay was a huge miss, that it was an huge negative to me, and that I won’t buy another car without it. And I mean it.

You mean except for the one you already bought that didn’t have CarPlay? :giggle:

I was very clear above where said that I thought “it’ll be fine,” but that I regret it and as good as the Rivian system is not having CarPlay is in fact worse than I expected. And that I won’t ever buy another car without it. As in It’s a deal breaker.
