I'm guessing it looks exactly like the three keys in apple wallet on the other side of the picture you cropped :D The only question being - how is the color chosen ;) I want a compass yellow one!

Would be cool if it matched to your actual vehicle color and handy for those with multiple Rivians. Hope I get a Dune colored one!

Help me. I have multiple cards in my iPhone wallet. My credit card comes up by default. If I put the Rivian card in the wallet. I have to;
1. Take out my phone
2. Wake my phone and open the wallet.
3. Take my winter gloves off.
4. Tap the Rivian card to bring that to the front
5. Be close enough to the vehicle to tap the phone to the door handle

Isn’t it easier to open the locks by pushing the key fob button from, like, 100 feet away????

What am I missing????

That a CarKey is not a credit card.

Apple supports hands free proximity locking/unlocking. So the end user experience will be the same as it should be today with the Rivian app - but unlike the current user experience it shouldn’t leave you waiting like Ben Affleck doing the phone fumble trying to get it to work.

Edit: docs here https://support.apple.com/en-us/118271 I’m assuming Rivian have implemented express mode, or they will have a revolt on their hands. Also as it’s Apple they call what everyone else calls proximity ‘passive’ and what everyone else calls touch ‘proximity’ for reasons I’m sure Steve Jobs could explain if he were available.

Thanks. Will give it a try. Current phone method is not to my liking.

Has it been released? I'm still holding at 2025.38.30. My understanding is that this NFC will not be available before the release.

You can add my PAAK experience to the practically perfect list. There were problems very early on but were addressed with updates.
Same here, my PAAK is pretty much perfect. Gen1, DM, R1T.

I get no UWB on gen1 but come on at least give us nfc on our watch that would be just as good for me absolutely no reason that can’t be done from a technical standpoint given the G1 hardware

Maybe this will be helpful to explain how Car Key works. It's a video from Apple directly explaining how the technology works:

What's important to note is that Car Key relies on both ultra wide band (UWB) as well as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). While Gen1 Rivians have BLE, they don't have UWB and thus will never be compatible with Car Key.

That doesn’t stop Rivian from adding an NFC option to their apple watch app for G1 owners

Any word on the iWatch app?

As a Gen 1 owner, I’m fine not getting the key update, but it sure would be useful to have an official app (with complications) I can use to unlock my truck. The shortcuts are a bit annoying to use and often take over 10 seconds to execute.

Car Key can be NFC only, BLE/UWB is an optional requirement.

I stand by what I’ve thought previously on this:

Totally possible to implement both (and actually required to be implemented for the capability to unlock via your phone when the phones battery is dead) - the gen1 almost certainly has the required hardware to support CarKey with NFC only unlock (ie use your phone/watch like the card/wriststrap). That said - I do get why Rivian are not going to do this: it would be in some ways a bit of a step back from the current PaaK solution (when the phone is powered up), and more importantly - it means developing a net new capability on a now mantaince-mode stack.
That its taken them over a year after launch to implement this feature; really suggests how rushed gen2 really was/is. Soon as they got the hardware working in a test bench they shipped it, with the hope that later when they wrote the software it be able to make it work e2e.

only NFC support would be annoying to use everyday, would be the same experience of using a key card.
