For the past three years, Highway 1 has been closed south of Big Sur due to a series of washouts and landslides. But Cal Trans just announced the reopening! We're planning to camp near Big Sur and Pismo Beach on our way to King of the Hammers the first week of February. When we booked our campsites, there was a lot of availability still, but I can't imagine that will last.

If you're curious about King of the Hammers, it's an off-road extravaganza held in Johnson Valley, not far from Joshua Tree. For the last few years, Optima has held an EV specific trail day complete with onsite charging, called Optima Unplugged. This year, Rivian Clubs of America are hosting a second day of trail runs. Check out the events and come join us for some fun in the desert.

We haven't camped at these coastal sites with our Rivian, so we can't make a recommendation yet. We know that we'll charge at the Rivian Adventure network charging station near our Pismo Beach campsite. I'll write up a report when we get back.

Ok I called the Pfeiffer SP, they said they don't have any electric connections on site.

Some campgrounds don't have dedicated EV charging stations, but they do have campsites with power for RVs. The Rivian portable charging cable can be used with most of these with the appropriate adapter.

I didn't mention ev I just asked if they have rv electric hookups on site and they don't. I wish Rivian or anyone else had DC Fast charges near Big Sur.

Much of the area runs off grid with solar and/or generators.

Don't need a coastal site to see the event at Joshua Tree.

Yes, there is certainly room for improvement! We have a route from our home in San Francisco to Big Sur that has us topping up in Marina.
