This is such a broad brush comment that it is completely not true.

The gas expense going up $0.50/gal is at the most 10% where the gas price was $5/gal, which you can count the number of states in a single hand. And it also depends on how much a households spends on gas as percent of the total expenses.

Even when the cost of transportation filters down to product prices, its not going to raise the prices by 50%.

Just keeping it real...
Diesel last week was $3.49, it’s now $4.99. Heating oil last week was $2.95, it’s now $4.50. Those are real prices we are paying right now in Alaska.

Both Alaska and Hawaii were special case due to geographical location when it comes to anything national average. Lets keep that in mind.

Can't speak to the price of diesel since where I am in CA, I don't think the governor allows it (J/K). Price of gas is now about $5+/gal (little less at Costco) for regular. It was around $4.50/gal couple weeks ago.

So you're still paying less than us in CA.

Gas at the pumps is up about 45 cents here since the War started. And really, it's still cheap overall.
Isn't this the definition of gaslighting? Gas prices have gone up a LOT. Fact. It's because of the War. Fact. And it IS a War, despite the administration's denials and their attacks against those who dare to call it a War. Don't tell me it's "still cheap" like I should be grateful that the price hasn't risen more...

I keep wondering what life would be like if gas went to $10.00 per gallon..
It would be interesting, I know here in SoCal back in 2014 gas was around $5.30 a gallon and traffic was very light. People were car pooling more, working from home, and just driving much less. Adjusted for inflation that would be around $7.00 today so am curious what our highways will look like if it reaches that.

There are many more EV/Hybrid vehicles on the road here now so may not be as big of an impact now.

Just look to Europe. Not quite $10/gal, but around $8/gal pre-Iran conflict. Diesel is little less.

The major difference, of course is the transportation infrastructure compared to the US's.

We'll get there eventually. I remember during dot-com boom of late 90s when gas shot up over $3/ga (in SF bay area) and everyone thought that was the end of the world.

I like to look for the silver lining ... more people would get off their fat asses and walk/bike. Seriously, the number of Mom's driving in their Yukons the 800 yds to the bus stop with their kids twice a day(who are perfectly able to walk) is staggering. So is the engines running for 10+mins whilst waiting (but honeslty they do really care about global warming, so they tell me).

I've owned EV's since 2011. Gas prices go up and down. We don't need to post "worst time to own an EV" when gas prices decrease either.

Many US cities are not built to be walkable/bikeable. The closest non-residential structure to me is ironically a gas station. It's a 2 1/2 mile walk through a (nice) wooded trail to the closest grocery store. That's nice for a lazy weekend, but completely untenable for daily life.

A lot of roads have no bike lanes or even shoulders. There have been a few hand-waving changes made to some roads where they replace a travel lane or turn lane with bike lanes, but these lanes have no other lanes to connect to, so you're left with some island area where you can take a bike. If you live in that small area, a bike becomes an option, but overall this does not solve any problem as it benefits so few people. Instead the change snarls traffic flow which increases the amount of gas spent for distance traveled.

Bike lanes do have a problem: they collect road debris like stones, glass, and tiny wires from tires. Cyclists tend to ride where the cars ride because that is the lowest probability of a puncture.

So cyclists are upset they can’t use a bike lane full of debris they can’t necessarily see. Motorists are upset because the cyclists are not using the bike lanes. Cities are upset because of the angry comments from motorists and cyclists after the city spent all that money on bike lanes. Catch-22

I tend to prefer sharrows because there is space for a bike and vehicles tend to sweep debris away from the shared space.

What is a "sharrow"?

in the road lane where road engineers think cyclists should position themselves. Cars drive over that area as well
