R1 Brake Caliper Cleaning Recommendation

I just spoke to Rivian Support who offered to add the caliper cleaning to an appointment I already have coming up at a service center but they said the it would be $300 just for the caliper cleaning. They said if I had this done by a mobile tech it would be $300, and would be in addition to the $60 for tire rotation, but they don't have any mobile appointments to offer in my area anyway. So I've got a $900 service appointment coming up that is entirely maintenance - recommended annual comprehensive inspection ($300), plus the every three years brake fluid flush ($300) plus annual brake calliper cleaning ($300). Insane.

Yep. I bought my I Pace new in September 2021 and it has 57,000 miles on it. I have not spent a dime in maintenance. Jaguar covers routine scheduled maintenance for the first five years or 60k miles. My tires and brakes are still in great shape. I don't think they have had to do anything except change the cabin filter and top up the wiper fluid. When I do take it in for a day they put me in a Jaguar loaner, not an enterprise shitbox.

On the other hand, my R1T has 47,000 miles on it and I had had to replace the tires at 31k miles ($1600) and the front front brakes at 39k miles ($950), plus $300 annually for a comprehensive inspection and $300 for caliper cleaning. I love the R1T, but EVs are supposed to be virtually maintenance free, and that's been my experience with the I Pace and not the R1T.

I love my truck and I've got a day-one reservation for an R2, cross shopping against the BMW iX3 coming out at around the same time, but routine maintenance costs are absolutely going to be a consideration for me and I'm honestly leaning towards the BMW.

If you don't like maintenance along with tire & brake replacement don't get a BMW. The run flat tires ride terrible and last less than the stock Rivian tires. BMW doesn't warranty their brakes AT ALL any more. We've owned three X5s and just traded off my last one ever. Just be careful. Don't disagree with you on some of the Rivian crap either.

Run Flats ride terrible on any car. That's because they have a nylon disk in the sidewalls. It's these—and the structrural rigidity they provide—that give them their run flat capability.

The car my T replaced, '13 X5 diesel w/sport package, full brake replacement every 2 years. About $3k+ if done at dealer. Half that at independent shop, including cost of parts I supply and sourced from FCP Euro. And it weighed over 2k lbs less than the T.

Maintenance/repair on expensive cars are expensive. The R1 is an expensive car.

Assuming nobody else has pointed this out, your Rivian is MUCH heavier than your Jaguar Pace, which accounts for the extra brake wear and tear.

My truck is currently at the SC for the last repair I'll get under warranty. (Made it by 19 miles). So I asked them what their recommendation was for the brake servicing. They recommended after every other winter season. Their quote was $210+tax.

I was just quoted one hour of remote service to perform the cleaning. ( along with a tire swap ) next Monday.

Based on a previous post above, I wonder if Rivian might be trying to mitigate shorter than expected observed brake life. I’m going to have it done - and will speak with the service person to see what they have to say.

Update: Remote service did a quick inspection while doing the tire rotation and talked me out of having the cleaning done - he showed me the brakes and rotors (no sign of significant dust/ residue) - saved me the $290 that they were going to charge (and he got to go home early...).

So once they inspected and cleaned them, found out the front pads needed to be replaced. They were all 4 replaced along with new rotors under warranty about 1.5 years ago. He asked if I do a lot of towing, which I do. About 5k miles towing since they were last replaced, so I guess that will be an ongoing cost every couple of years.

I have my wheels rotated by Rivian annually so that I can ask them to clean my brake pads and lubricate the caliper pins.

Otherwise I normally do my own wheel rotation in the garage.

Removing the caliper pins is basically one step removed from doing the entire brake job. Once the pin comes out the pad is free. Doubt it will be cheap with Rivian rates. I’d just make sure to clean off any road salt with a good strong pressure wash and then if you are rotating the tires you can hit it with some brake parts cleaner.

I’ve owned many cars and have cleaned a few brake calipers with CRC Brakleen Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaner. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe Rivian brakes are any different.
