I'm not sure I follow. There is empty space not being used at the back of the bed if you don't have a powered tonneau. That space is different from the gear tunnel (it's not like the gear tunnel loses space when you retract. the powered tonneau).

Ok so the savings, if regular driving is ~40kW, could be about 10% with the heat pump. That is actually pretty material. I would still prefer the resistive heater but 10% range is not nothing.
Having to put chains on and take them off every time you leave your driveway is probably going to be a drag (they probably don’t want you driving with your chains on in the town because it is hard on pavement).
If it were just snow, your best bet would be to put on winter tires for the winter...
