I just had a chat with Rivian AI, and got this answer.
What are the odds of me getting a Rivian R2 launch edition before October 2026?

Here’s what we know: R2 deliveries in the US start with the Performance trim (including the Launch Package) in spring 2026, with Premium trims following in late 2026. If you’re hoping to get a Launch Edition before October 2026, your odds depend on a few things—mainly your reservation date, your delivery location, and whether you’re already a Rivian R1 owner (since R1 owners get priority for early deliveries).
Rivian hasn’t published reservation numbers or individual delivery estimates yet, but if you already have a reservation and you’re not an R1 owner, you’ll be in line after those with priority. By the end of June, you’ll be able to see your estimated order window in your Rivian account, and order invites will go out in batches.
If you want to keep tabs on your place in line or make a reservation, you can do that at the R2 reservation page.
If you’d like to talk through your specific situation—like your reservation date or R1 ownership status—let me know!

I'm an R2 reservation holder and received a sales call from Rivian last week to try and get me into an R1. They told me if you reserved after January this year, you're looking at least until 2027 at the earliest. That could be some sales pressure, but probably right.

Did they offer any incentives to get you to purchase the R1. If they were to offer me the six grand on the R1 T, I would do it cause I don’t have it in me to wait a year.

They have no idea until they allow orders to come in. Reservations mean nothing as far as a predictor of actual orders. Classic sales tactics.

I am very curious as to how Rivian is going to provide every reservation holder with an estimated order timeline before the end of June that has any reasonable accuracy. Seems to me that predicting the actual reservation conversion rate would be pretty challenging without at least a couple months' worth of observation of such. Not to mention the larger distortions that will be caused by people waiting for RAP1/LIDAR or $45K builds.

They are desperate. I used the site’s trade-in calculator on my Model 3 last week. Within 5 minutes I got a text, and within 15 mins some called me trying to get me into an R1.

I was kinda taken aback.

They basically went over the current offers and incentives, including leasing - which isn't even available in my state (Indiana).

You're just assuming the AI is right? LOL. Of course it's not. At most we will get a very large delivery window. If it goes the same way as the R1, the initial 1k shipments will find out very soon after configuration. Then the next 25k configurations that match currently-produced colors and interiors and model will get a broad window (maybe 3 months) through the end of this year - most will probably be Q4. Then the next 25-50k will get maybe a 6 month window for 2027.

Updates will follow, narrowing your date within your window as that window approaches

Why do people keep asking AI stupid questions like this? It’s not “smart” for these kinds of things. It’s simply regurgitating information it scraped off the web.

Until AI searches start providing references to where it pulled that information, it’s useless. It could be referencing a thread here that was written 8 months ago for all you know.

At least when I do a normal Google search I can see where the information is coming from and assess the source.

100%. According to the AI chat bot they’ll let people put in their preferred build and if they want Gen3 autonomy in a few weeks and then they’ll slot deliveries from there. Sounds logical but we will see.

Not in the least possible to do this as you indicate because Rivian doesn't have enough information to make an educated guess. Rivian is missing the all important actual conversion rate on reservations in hand.

Im sure they have an estimate, but it's wrong, so I highly doubt they are providing a window to everyone in the reservation with any specificity pool before one order has been placed. Just asking to anger the group.

What is more likely is a high level split of timing, general but good enough to directionally educate customers in the reservation pool.

For example they can produce X Rivians, so back into estimated conversion and in June provide X/Conv% reservation holders "before December 2026". Everyone else gets 2027-2028.

In September they update everyone to be "Before December 2026" with new X/Conv% (based on actual 3 month reservation conversion and everyone else gets 2027-2028,

In December they update everyone to be 2027 based on how many they'll produce in 2027 using X/Conv% with everyone else 2028+.

This is one way to handle it reforcasting quarterly to update customers.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

If it’s availability you’re looking for, the R1T and R1S are ready to go. If it’s affordability you’re looking for, you’ll have to wait for the R2 and its variants.

When did you put your reservation down? I was holding out for an R3X/R3, but I ended up putting a reservation down on an R2 in November of 2025. I’m about 5 hours away from Normal, Illinois, so not exactly close. I’m guessing I’ll get mine sometime in 2027.

Rivian Assistant said Rivian was going to start production on the R3X at the end of this year. I chose not to believe it.
