I'm reviving this thread.......with some updates.

I was randomly doom scrolling through Instagram reels on Saturday afternoon. Came across one for "Android Bluetooth Optimization" or something about that. The poster had a method for improving Bluetooth stability. Essentially Android treats the Bluetooth service as an app. Because of that it can control the battery usage of that app. I went in, found that setting, and changed it from "optimized" to "unrestricted". I did this for the "Bluetooth" app, and the "BluetoothLegacy" app. I then restarted the device to ensure settings took hold for everything.

Since I made the change, and I'm a glutton for punishment, I'm going to test it again, and see how long it continues to work for me. Might be an exercise in futility, might be the "fix" for my complaints with the system......well some of my complaints, some are systemic and won't go away.

Initial testing shows VERY positive results. 3 days now, and it's been working exactly as it should. Both walking up to the truck while it's asleep, and even after just parking and coming back shortly which was a common complaint. I've also noticed my Garmin watch seems to be more reliably connecting when I walk into/out of a room that it's in, so I'm hoping that's a real change, and not just placebo.

If this works out, I'll eat the crow I deserve from everyone that said "It's your phone, not the truck". Stay tuned for me details.

Well, spoke too soon. System is still crap. Works sometimes, doesn't other times. Can't find a good pattern to it. Restart of the phone fixes it for awhile, but rarely longer than a day at a time.

I'm giving up again and going back to carrying the fob.

Only 14mo left.

Does your Gen1 use the wallet for PaaK? If so, also check the battery and location settings for the wallet app. Not the Rivian key, but the wallet app itself. It might be going to sleep. I think mine was and Paak has gotten better since I made the wallet app unrestricted.

Unfortunately it still isn't perfect. Today PaaK unlocked the truck but then could not detect the key as I was sitting in the driver's seat. I waited about 10 seconds and then it worked. Not sure if that is the phone or truck, but it did unlock so who knows?

The worst is getting locked out in bad weather. I have not been locked out for even a few seconds in a couple months or more. Unlocking has been very reliable. Detecting the key inside the truck - not as good.

No idea if it uses the wallet app. I don't see my Rivian key in there, and I use the app often.

I'm a glutten for punishment and am equally a fan of the scientific method. I'll give it a shot.

Fun fact, it locked me out last night at the soccer game. App wouldn't respond, PaaK didn't work. Wallet was in the console with the key card and fob was on the key ring at home. Took a call to Rivian to get me in. Then, as I walked to the the trash out this morning, a good 20+ft from the truck, it unlocked itself as I walked around the corner of the house.

If it would just be consistent, work or don't, just do the same thing every time. Fork this is just an agitating machine.

One thing I learned about PaaK in my Mach-e was permissions are everything. Unlimited battery and unlimited location settings. Whatever you need to do to give the apps that connect with the truck full access is important.

After reading all of your trials and tribulations, if I were you I would just carry the fob and be done with it. Always holding a back up card key is also good, if you want to still take the phone route. I think probably there's something going on with your Gen1 truck that is not common, especially within the Gen2 vehicles. My PaaK problems are different from yours.

If you want to only use your phone, buy a Tesla. Or just keep fob.

This is essentially what I default to. I'm an idiot and glutton for punishment so I "try again" after every update, or whenever I think I might have found a tip/trick/setting that could change the situation.

Even so far as I remove the nearby devices permissions from the app when I go to the "fob only" route. Fairly certain the truck gets confused when there are multiple keys in the truck at the same time, and I have to hit the lock button on the fob, while sitting in the drivers seat, for it to recognize it as "the source of key truth" to use.

It's just not a great system that is over-reliant on tech in the name of ultimate security.

Just wish the fob wasn't so damn big and had a more reliable "additional keys" attachment. The carabiner spring is too weak to provide confidence it will hold onto anything.

I assume you have taking it to a Service Center to check the radio network in your truck? One of your BT receivers could be bad or some sort of calibration needed.

I am not familiar with how the BT radios work on the R1, but likely they are in multiple locations, and they work together to determine how close you are to the truck.

There is probably one inside the cabin that is used to let you start the truck, which could explain why my truck will unlock but then fail to detect the key inside the cabin. I doubt I have a radio issue, because it was flawless for many months until the wallet key update. But still, I might also have a hardware problem.

At this point it is rare, and worst case I can use NFC on the charging pad as it seems to work every time. So I am not worried about getting stranded.

Been to service multiple times. Each time it comes back "functioning normally". They say the same thing about the suspension that sounds like a broken hay wagon as well. Nothing better than a poor experience explained as "normal"......guess it's just a crap experience then? Not sure service really understands (or doesn't have control over) making it work properly.

Also, adjusted permissions on the wallet app. No change this morning. Had to force close the app, turn off BT, restart app, turn on BT to get the truck to wake and unlock. Had been sitting in the driveway charging all night.

First interaction of the day is never good. Ever. If the truck is asleep it's VERY slow to respond, if at all. If it's raining it often doesn't work well either.
