Hello my dudes!
Quick post about something that I've been kicking around for quite some time (literally, for like 8-9 months now) and looking for feedback before I potentially dial it in for production.
This is a trash bin that hooks over the lip of your door pocket and uses a cheap doggo waste bag as the liner. It's a two-frame design: you drape the bag over the inner frame, slide it into the outer frame, and clip the inner frame in. That pinches the bag between the two frames and holds it taut. The opening stays wide and the bag doesn't pull in or flop around when you toss garbage in. The bag hangs down into the pocket, and when it's full you can unclip, pull the bag, put a new one in and reinstall.
This is inspired by a bunch of other generic options that use these cheap-o doggie waste bags. Turns out, they are the right size and price, hang nice, are generally pretty tough, so folks seem to be onto something.
The hooks are the same door clips Todd Stansell designed. I've already been using on the cup holders and the NACS adapter holder, so that part of the fit is proven. I built the bin model on top of those clips, same as I did with the NACS adapter. (it actually started as that, just flipped) As this stands, it will fit all R1S and R1Ts, and I believe both front and rear door pockets, but will not work with the R2 ... at least not yet.
This isn't for sale quite yet (hence the forum this post is in, and the WIP title) and I'm after a bit of feedback prior to doing anything with it beyond posting the model publicly. Specifically, here is what I'm wondering about:
The STLs for these are available here: https://www.printables.com/model/1762848-opensourceev-door-pocket-trash-bin-for-rivian-r1s. and it's not currently for sale. If you're interested, please download and print it. A good PETG for this should be ok, but PLA is a 100% no-go. Keep in mind that you'll need the two bits from my model and the two Long Door Mounts from Todd's model. (it's linked on the Printables listing)
It's also worth noting that this is the very first model that we're publishing under the new, Prusa Labs created Open Community License. Every design I've made to date (30+) has been published with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License. I've never really been happy with that, as IMHO it's a bit too restrictive as it's geared almost exclusively toward personal use, and restricts commercial users completely, at least on paper, even if they are not selling them. That, I think, is pretty bunk. Josef Prusa has a really, really good post about why it's needed here: https://blog.prusa3d.com/core-one-cad-files-release-under-the-new-open-community-license-ocl_127290/.
Long story short, I believe it's the right language at the right time. Version 1 of the OCL was published late last month, and while this is the first model that uses it, I'll be moving every model that I've ever posted to it soon, and I hope that others do too.
Please post what you think - good, bad or otherwise.

- How do we feel about the overall design? - I've been waffling about adding a lid, and if it should be friction closing or have like a little magnet, but I've backed off of that. It's down and out of the way in the first place, and opening it before adding trash is just a pain.
- Bag Fit. - I've designed this around what looks to be the standard size for a dog poop bag - 13" x 9". I checked ever bag roll that we have at the house, and they are all that size, but I figured I would ask around too.
- Opening Size. - The opening for the waste is around 5.5" x 2". It's a bit of a dance between making it fit the bag, be big enough for the tip of your fingers and the waste, and the frame so it is both supportive and a bit flexible.
- The retainment system. - This is very much for folks who print and use it, and it might be an "it is what it is" thing that you don't have to deal with often, but I'm curious if you think it's good enough or if there are improvements / alterations needed.
- Rear Pockets. - This should fit, from what I can see. Do you normally carry anything back there which would make it not fit?
- Rattles, sounds, etc. - I think this should be good enough (e.g very little to none) but I'm looking for confirmation under different use cases.
