Hello my dudes!
Quick post about something that I've been kicking around for quite some time (literally, for like 8-9 months now) and looking for feedback before I potentially dial it in for production.

This is a trash bin that hooks over the lip of your door pocket and uses a cheap doggo waste bag as the liner. It's a two-frame design: you drape the bag over the inner frame, slide it into the outer frame, and clip the inner frame in. That pinches the bag between the two frames and holds it taut. The opening stays wide and the bag doesn't pull in or flop around when you toss garbage in. The bag hangs down into the pocket, and when it's full you can unclip, pull the bag, put a new one in and reinstall.

This is inspired by a bunch of other generic options that use these cheap-o doggie waste bags. Turns out, they are the right size and price, hang nice, are generally pretty tough, so folks seem to be onto something.

The hooks are the same door clips Todd Stansell designed. I've already been using on the cup holders and the NACS adapter holder, so that part of the fit is proven. I built the bin model on top of those clips, same as I did with the NACS adapter. (it actually started as that, just flipped) As this stands, it will fit all R1S and R1Ts, and I believe both front and rear door pockets, but will not work with the R2 ... at least not yet.

This isn't for sale quite yet (hence the forum this post is in, and the WIP title) and I'm after a bit of feedback prior to doing anything with it beyond posting the model publicly. Specifically, here is what I'm wondering about:
  • How do we feel about the overall design? - I've been waffling about adding a lid, and if it should be friction closing or have like a little magnet, but I've backed off of that. It's down and out of the way in the first place, and opening it before adding trash is just a pain.
  • Bag Fit. - I've designed this around what looks to be the standard size for a dog poop bag - 13" x 9". I checked ever bag roll that we have at the house, and they are all that size, but I figured I would ask around too.
  • Opening Size. - The opening for the waste is around 5.5" x 2". It's a bit of a dance between making it fit the bag, be big enough for the tip of your fingers and the waste, and the frame so it is both supportive and a bit flexible.
  • The retainment system. - This is very much for folks who print and use it, and it might be an "it is what it is" thing that you don't have to deal with often, but I'm curious if you think it's good enough or if there are improvements / alterations needed.
  • Rear Pockets. - This should fit, from what I can see. Do you normally carry anything back there which would make it not fit?
  • Rattles, sounds, etc. - I think this should be good enough (e.g very little to none) but I'm looking for confirmation under different use cases.

The STLs for these are available here: https://www.printables.com/model/1762848-opensourceev-door-pocket-trash-bin-for-rivian-r1s. and it's not currently for sale. If you're interested, please download and print it. A good PETG for this should be ok, but PLA is a 100% no-go. Keep in mind that you'll need the two bits from my model and the two Long Door Mounts from Todd's model. (it's linked on the Printables listing)

It's also worth noting that this is the very first model that we're publishing under the new, Prusa Labs created Open Community License. Every design I've made to date (30+) has been published with the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License. I've never really been happy with that, as IMHO it's a bit too restrictive as it's geared almost exclusively toward personal use, and restricts commercial users completely, at least on paper, even if they are not selling them. That, I think, is pretty bunk. Josef Prusa has a really, really good post about why it's needed here: https://blog.prusa3d.com/core-one-cad-files-release-under-the-new-open-community-license-ocl_127290/.

Long story short, I believe it's the right language at the right time. Version 1 of the OCL was published late last month, and while this is the first model that uses it, I'll be moving every model that I've ever posted to it soon, and I hope that others do too.

Please post what you think - good, bad or otherwise.

Hey there,

I like the design. At first I thought perhaps this would go into the side door pocket (a favorite place for my favorite person to put her trash and a bit of a pet peace of mine). Would it not get in the way a little bit of it hangs out into the vehicle? Or am I misunderstanding the placement?

One challenge (not necessarily a function of the design) is that clipped onto any door or setback pocket, the trash bin would be difficult to access by all but the passenger it is closest to. (e.g., If back of the passenger seat then the front passenger wouldn't be able to reach it.)

Our trash bin invariably sits on the floor in front of the middle rear seat on our R1T, where it is accessible by all passengers and only potentially in the way if there is a 5th passenger in the middle of the back seat. We use one of the cloth/nylon bins that uses a doggie/shopping bag as a liner. Would appreciate a better way to anchor it as the nylon straps under the raised back seat are awkward.

Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

It does hang out inside of the side pocket. It would be intentionally not boxed in so stuff could theoretically ride underneath if wanted, like an umbrella.

I initially had it in the middle, but didn't really like it being on display, hence the move. The thought was that it would be sold in a two-pack or whatever for $20 or so.

Not sure if this helps. Not trying to explain away, just wanted to provide context.

Interesting. To confirm, this fits in the driver door pocket? Can you add a photo showing it installed?

I already put trash in that pocket, and also already keep a roll of dog bags in the car (they're everywhere, curse of being a pet owner) so this might be something I'd be interested in. Thanks!

Btw, can you make these sunglass holders?

I ordered a set off Etsy but they were too thick and snapped immediately when I tried to install them, and the seller ghosted me. ☹

This would fall under "otherwise".. I think your PA (Pressure Advance) setting needs re-calibrating, you're getting bulging on outside corners.

I opted out of producing these due to the comment on the model, by Todd, the author himself. He felt that it was too cluttered with these installed and ended up storing his glasses elsewhere. I'd actually recommend the Overhead Glasses Holder instead - I've run it for over 3 years and I literally made a new version for the SIlverado EV as I love it so much.

If you really want it, PM me. Just looking at the design, I could see how it would break easily if it's not produced right.

Produced in draft resolution on my OG Kickstarter X1C. Not really representative of the final product. I was actually debating if noting it in the post.

Here is on printed on a production machine, with closer-to-production settings. I've also grabbed something off my desk to provide scale. Keep in mind this is ASA, not much more forgiving PLA or PETG, and it has an unsupported 45 degree angle on top of it, which is max (IMHO) for ASA:
