Newbie here so be easy on me ;)

I am seeing on the Tesla site a Wall Connector and a Universal Wall Connector

The “universal” ($570) seems to be for Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles while the “wall connector” ($485)is for Tesla vehicles.

I do not want to order the wrong one, so help please

Thanks
The Wall Connector is designed to be permanently mounted and will work with all vehicles.
The Universal is designed for portable use although some use it everyday at home.

I recommend the Wall Connector. Portable would be for an existing frequent destination where there is only an outlet available. Plenty of charging connections on the road if going significant distance.

I have the Rivian wall unit at home and work has the Tesla Wall Connectors.

I would tend to get the Rivian unit unless there is a Tesla feature that is needed.

No, that's not right. There are two "Wall Connectors" and a "Mobile Connector". The Mobile one is the one you can through in the trunk and take with you to charge at a friends house or wherever you may find yourself. The Wall Connectors are the permanently installed ones you'd put in your garage. The Universal one means it includes an adapter for J1772 vehicles, while the other one includes only a NACS connector. Both should be able to charge any car which can physically connect to it (any J1772 adapter would probably work with the non-universal one too).

The Universal one additionally has support for "PowerShare" which is Tesla's V2H (vehicle to home) branding. I think that's only available on the Cybertruck currently and who knows if it will be compatible with any other brand, so I wouldn't bank on that just yet.

So one wall Connector comes with an adapter. Still same unit and will charge all vehicles.

Yes, that is my understanding based on the specs and video on Tesla's shop page. The price difference is $85 which seems expensive for just the J1772 adapter, so I'm guessing there is some electrical difference to support the V2H PowerShare, but I don't know what the actual difference is.

Either is compatible with V2H connected to your Cybertruck. No other vehicles are compatible.
Also need a gateway or Powerwall to make it work.

Does the specific charger software control setting charge level caps like not going above 80% day to day or is that controlled by the vehicle? I've never owned an electric vehicle of any kind so this is maybe an easy answer for anyone with more knowledge than me.
I read that the Rivian app from your phone allows you to adjust the min/max charge and not have to do it from the in-car setting like my wife's Genesis GV60. I started a thread this am. If there is no real benefit to the upcharge of Rivian's level2 hardwired charger, than I will buy another Emporia.

In eager anticipation of ordering an R2 Premium, the reality of needed an in-home level 2 charger is obvious. According to the Rivian Store, their level 2 charger is currently at $800 without installation. I have found several reputable companies offering level 2 charges for almost half the cost.

What are your feelings. Should I use a Rivian charger, or is it safe to go with another? In either case, the charger and 50A 240V line from my circuit panel will be installed by me.

Thanks!

I purchased directly from MSI USA, they are a large computer company. They offer many charger options for about $400. To top it off, they have a 5yr warranty. I added the 240 volt outlet but went with 40 amp instead of 50 amp. I been using this for about 2+ years now without any issues. Make sure you get a model that has a NACS plug. I would not use an adapter. They offer many charger options for about $400. I hope this helps

Oh, like the computer/components company! Wild, I had no idea they were making EVSEs, very cool, their computer related products are outstanding.

Yeah, they are a great company. The largest concern to think about with a 50 amp charger is how hot they can get while charging, espiecially if your charging in a closed garage overnight. The MSI charger has overload & thermal protection which gives you piece of mind. The internal control box monitors live electrical temperatures. If it detects abnormal heat buildup, the charger will automatically throttle down its speed or temporarily halt the charging session. So basically they use their thermal management expertise from their computers and apply it to the chargers. And once again, you can't beat that 5 yr warranty.

FWIW the Rivian charger is actually made by Lite-On. Yes that same Lite-On you also know from computer power supplies and other computery things!

FWIW, I just bought an Iyilo 48a charger, and plan to start the installation today. It got great reviews, and it's price seemed reasonable.

Thanks again to all!
