where can i view the r3/r3x near me today? the OC, socal locations

i have a free weekend and wanted to see if i can view the actual demo car in person.
around the OC, socal area.

does anyone know how i can track this demo car they have around here?

Nowhere. It exists only in concept form. Unless Rivian decides to show it, it’s inaccessible. Just follow there social accounts and watch/wait for announcements. And Rivian does not always attend the LAAS.

Rivian had it on display for a few months after reveal back in 2024 but no one has really seen it since. Calculated move probably because it was so popular and had more buzz than the R2. They certainly have been hiding it as they’ve moved towards the R2 release this year. I’d imagine we won’t hear or see anything about it for a while. They’ve said multiple times it’ll be built in the new plant in GA and that’s not until 2028 at the earliest. If it were me I’d slow and then stop production of the R1 and accelerate the R3/R3X to be produced in IL. Once the GA plant is built they can restart the R1 line as a completely redesigned vehicle in IL.

I saw the R3X twice at different events in Seattle in 2024. It is an awesome looking vehicle. I like everything about it. I’m planning to get an R2 but will trade it in in a heartbeat for the R3X.

just did a test drive on the r2. im not sure why its such a big deal to hide the r3x since its a different car with the size. if the r3x was not available i still wouldnt buy the r2. the r2 is still too large for us. i would just move on to another car anyways.

Hide? What on earth are you talking about. There’s no hiding anything. It’s a matter of capital expenditure and production capacity. Midsized SUVs, which is what the R2 is, is the largest slice of the market. It doesn’t take much to understand why it was prioritized for production, in order to increase revenue. The revenue and momentum needed raise more cash and continue to grow the company along with planned products.

Rivian has already said multiple times that R3 is not planned to enter production until after GA plant is built and producing (R2). And that R2 production start won’t happen until sometime during 2028.

R3X is a tarted up version of R3. And R3 is on a shortened R2 chassis. R2, from the start, was designed on a scalable platform that could underpin other models, for sake of production efficiency and profitability.

No one is entitled a R3-anything just because they want one now. It’s a business. And like any business they have to be budget conscious if they want to avoid spending itself into oblivion. See Fisker. Both times.

The R3s in existence are one-off hand-built concept cars. Concept cars are generally worth millions and are not fully functional cars. If they can move under their own power at all, they are only built to drive at low speeds; from the transport trailer to the stage and back. Because of their high value, they are generally only shown on special occasions and not available for direct interaction with the public (look only, from afar). Even if the R3X was on tour today, you wouldn’t take away much more than you already can from the internet.

Since you already sampled the R2 Performance (which is what the Launch Edition is), expect R3X to be more spritely with better power to weight ratio and shorter wheelbase.

They're not "hiding" it - the one or two that exist so far are "early pre-production prototypes" they traded around to drum up interest. They don't even come close to representing a final production vehicle. R2 changed significantly from the same demo units shown at the same time, and its full production was much sooner.

They didn't even let people get inside it at any of the demos I went to - at best you could lean over a rope preventing you from approaching too close and point your phone in the open windows or doors.

That’s because both were one-off concept cars. The R2 was the same Laguna Beach Theater car repainted, to Esker Silver (after a mishap during transit between two tour events, and possibly painted twice—first seen with door jambs still in white at NYC Space grand opening, then fully Esker some months later). Neither had functional UI. Only mockups that could scroll from one screen to another. Purely for show. Both, along with R1 concepts, will either remain in Rivian’s private collection or in a museum someday.

Preproduction R2 prototypes were not trotted out until more recently, when they did the multi-state road show (iirc, SXSW kicked it off in March, along with confirmation that deliveries would begin in June).
