Don't even bother asking Rivian SC. R2 production and deliveries haven't started. There are no factory alternatives at the moment and none announced. Wait and see, or get yourself a the aftermarket one from soonishev.com (plus two charging pucks).
This entire thread is about the existence of a factory alternative that is in the wild now

Chatted with someone at the SC yesterday, and he mentioned they are expecting them as a retrofit in the shop. Which makes sense, since they did the same for the "Gen 2" charger, which has since been removed

I get why they'd want to make it a SC-installed item, since some people are dangerous even with a screwdriver. But, c'mon, at least make DIY an option; with the obligatory disclaimers of course. Those who have installed aftermarket options know all it takes is a sacrificial retail store rewards card, disconnecting and reconnecting a harness plug, plus less than 3 minutes... not even worth a SC tech's time.

Maybe there's some stuff that has to happen to keep the keycard functionality working after the swap to the new unit?

I wonder if it will be backwards compatible with the Gen1 rigs as well.... if so, I might actually get it and slap a little Qi-sized ring magnet in my phone case.

It wouldn't shock me if they decide to not make it backwards compatible with gen 1. But the current revised pad is... so maybe it's not cost prohibitive for them.

Likely. With the Soonish one I installed, it requires removing the card-reader from the old one and installing it into the new one. The PCB that contained the card reader looked like it had an antenna built in and could very easily be broken if one wasn't careful.
